Meg has been in a bad climbing accident on Longs Peak on Sunday October 29, 2017. While wearing a helmet she was hit in the head from falling rock. Her rescue took over 6 hours, she is now at St Anthony's Hospital in Denver. Her family has traveled to be with her in the hospital.  She has suffered an open skull fracture and some minor cervical spine fractures. Results from an MRI on Monday  showed that on top of the spinal fracture there is a ligament tear - nothing that is compressing the spine, but they are looking to do surgery to stabilize the spine. She continues to be more responsive when they dial back the sedation but will continue keep her on the vent until after the surgery.  She is currently  in the ICU and prognosis is good for recovery.

While she is recovering  and focusing on returning normal life, she will need help covering medical bills, daily living expenses and travel expenses for her family.  Anything that is contributed will be greatly appreciated.  She is a strong lady who will hopefully get through this with the grace and tenacity that she overcome other obsticales.

It is nearly a week to the hour that we found out meg had an accident and rescue teams were working to evacuate her from RMNP. Its a miracle that she didnt die upon rock impact. She not only withstood the rock, but also being lowered another 100ft from additonal rock fall, then 6 hours in freezing temps with a head wound and multiple cardiac arrests. She has had several surgeries, is rocking half a head of hair, staples in her skull and hardware in her neck. She was given a myriad of medications and tubes in more places in her body then you can possibly imagine. Its been a week.
Today she is alert, maintaining her own heart rate, blood pressure and airway, talking about climbing and smiling with visitors. Her pain is being managed fairly well, and a full recovery is expected. She is still in the ICU, but she has come a long way from being medflighted in with a body temp of 80 and a heart that didnt want to beat on its own. As many of you know, Meg is incredibly strong and when she sets her mind to do something... she does it. She set her mind to "get off that mountain" and now to "go home".
We have been asking her to communicate with by giving a "thumbs up" for approval all week, so for me this image will forever be associated with resilliance and the fight to live. We arent releasing any other photos from the week- that will be megs decision to make down the road- but for today, I want you to all see her giving you a "thumbs up". We are all so grateful for the rescue efforts, the medical staff at St. Anthonys and the encouragement and support from all of you. Thank you. (Bethany Kies)

After a few days of seemingly stable conditions and inprovements, Meg had to be re-intubated this morning (Saturday). Yesterday afternoon her team found lots of fluid and a partially collapsed lung, but even after draining the fluid and the expansion of the lung she just isnt breathing well enough on her own so she needs to go back on the ventilator. Continued thoughts and prayers are welcomed. Thank you all for your support (-Meg's sister Bethany)

Hi everyone- This is Meg's sister Bethany. Quick update on Meg: She is stable and done with surgeries for the skull fracture and spine. Her ventilator was removed this morning as well and she is breathing and maintaining blood pressure on her own at this point.
So mostly good news, but a few possible complications related to the fluid/flem in lungs/airway and difficulty coughing it up- could be risk for infection. Also found out she has at least one chipped tooth, so dental work will happen once she is out and recovering... added to the knee surgery she had planned for this week (prior to the accident) and Meg is going to have her share of med. appointments down the road.
Thank you all so much for your donations and support. We all appreciate it!
Once meg is talking, I will give her the option to share some of the photos Ive taken along the last few days, but for now no photos.
