ABOUT ME
My name is Aurore Iradukunda and I am 25 years old Rwandan-Canadian community organizer living in Montreal. My life story is nothing close to linear: I grew up in an underserved neighbourhood on the Eastside of Montreal where as a result of marginalization, academic perseverance was a challenge. Many high school teachers believed that kids that looked like me could only be good at basketball and I was once told in Cegep by an academic advisor that McGill was out of reach for someone like me.
Despite all odds, I obtained a Bachelor of Arts & Science with a Double Major in Molecular Cell Biology & African Studies from McGill University in 2018 and was 1 of 6 graduating black women Biology majors in a cohort of 600.
I currently hold an offer of admission to both of my dream schools: The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and The London School of Economics (also known as LSE) to purse a joint Masters of Science in Health Policy, Planning & Financing.
Post-secondary education, especially at world class institutions like LSE is often not a accessible for someone like me. However, I have never let my past or conditions define who I could be, what I could do and most importantly what I couldn't do!
WHY LSE AND WHY STUDY HEALTH POLICY?
It is a tremendous privilege to be a candidate at LSE which ranks, amongst universities like Oxford, Harvard and Cambridge, in the top 5 universities globally for social sciences and public policy. With this degree, I hope to contribute to the strengthening of health systems in sub-saharan Africa by tackling the shortcomings of health and economic policies as they relate to medical brain drain and health financing mechanisms. I am currently developing an alternative financing model that could have the capacity to fund and strengthen healthcare systems in sub-saharan Africa and obtaining this degree would be pivotal in the implementation of this idea!
Through my undergraduate, I have been fortunate enough to be selected as a Health Promotion intern under the Global Affairs Canada International Youth Internship program. My time as in intern in The Gambia really introduced me to the field of Global Health and I haven't looked back ever since. I believe that access to quality and affordable healthcare is a fundamental right and I sincerely hope to contribute to the implementation of policies and interventions that promote health equity globally.
THE REALITY
The total cost of tuition at LSE-LSTHM is £23,500 (38,150.30$ CAD) and living expenses for a year in London come up to £20,070 (32,581.54 CAD) for a grand total of 70 731.84$ CAD (Source 1 , Source 2). I have applied to *all* possible scholarships and funding opportunities, which even included trips out of town for interviews but the reality is that there aren’t many scholarship opportunities for Canadian looking to pursue Masters in the UK. With the support of my family and the provincial financial aid program, I was able to secure a total of 43 478$ CAD but I am still missing 27,253.84$ CAD to make my dream a reality! I only have one month left to secure all funding.
COMMUNITY
I am a product of community and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the countless mentors and community supporters I have been surrounded with throughout the years. I have been involved in the Montreal community and more specifically the Montreal African and youth community for the past 5 years. Mainly, as the co-founder of SAYASPORA, a platform that raises African women and youth voices in the diaspora and secondly through Apathy is Boring, where I currently support young people to implement community projects that carry a social impact while helping them build capacity and leadership. Building civically-sound youth leaders for the past year empowered me to realize that more than ever, youth should take their space in decision and policy-making, hence why I feel excited to embark on this journey of my own!

As someone that has benefitted from scholarships and mentorship, I pledge to give 5% of this fundraiser to Fonds 1804 , a foundation that promotes academic perseverance of marginalized youth through mentorship and scholarship opportunities. Je m'appelle Aurore Iradukunda et je suis une organisatrice communautaire rwando-canadienne-québécoise, âgée de 25 ans et résidant à Montréal. J’ai grandi au sein d’une famille immigrante avec des moyens très modestes. La persévérance scolaire était un réel défi. Beaucoup d’enseignants croyaient que quelqu’un comme moi ne pouvait être bon qu’au basket-ball ou une artiste quelconque. Quand j’ai expliqué mes rêves de poursuivre mes études à McGill, un conseiller pédagogique au Cégep m'a dit que McGill était hors de portée pour quelqu'un comme moi.
Malgré toutes ces difficultés, j'ai obtenu un baccalauréat en arts et sciences avec double spécialisation en biologie moléculaire et cellulaire et études africaines à l'Université McGill en 2018. Je fus l’une des six femmes noires diplômées en biologie dans une cohorte de 600 personnes.
Je détiens présentement une offre d'admission dans les deux écoles de mes rêves: the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) et the London School of Economics (également connue sous le nom de LSE) afin d’y poursuivre une maîtrise en santé publique avec spécialisation en Health Policy, Planning & Financing.
POURQUOI LSE ET POURQUOI ÉTUDIER LA SANTÉ PUBLIQUE?
C'est un immense privilège pour moi d’avoir été acceptée à LSE qui se classe parmi les cinq meilleures universités au monde en sciences sociales et en politique publique au même rang que Oxford, Harvard et Cambridge. Une fois terminée mes études, j’ai la ferme ambition de contribuer au renforcement des systèmes de santé en Afrique. Je développe actuellement un modèle de financement alternatif des services de santé et l'obtention de ce diplôme serait un instrument capital pour la mise en œuvre de cette idée ! Je crois fortement que l'accès aux soins de santé de qualité est un droit fondamental et j'espère contribuer à la mise en œuvre de politiques et d'interventions favorisant l'équité en matière de santé ici et ailleurs.
LA RÉALITÉ
Le coût total des frais de scolarité à LSE-LSTHM s’élèvent à £23,500 (soit 38,150.30$ CAN) et les frais de subsistance à Londres s'élèvent à £20,070 (soit 32,581.54 CAN) pour une année et ce pour un grand total de 70 731.84$ CAN (Source 1 , Source 2 ). J’ai postulé aux bourses disponibles, mais la réalité est qu’il n’y a pas beaucoup de bourses pour les Canadiens qui désirant poursuivre leur maîtrise en Angleterre. J'ai pu amasser une somme de 43 478 $ grâce au support de ma famille et du programme d'aide financière prêts et bourses, mais il me manque encore 27 253.84$ CAN pour réaliser mon rêve!
COMMUNAUTÉ
C’est grâce aux soutiens multiples et aux conseils de ma famille, mes amis, et de mes professeurs que je suis ce que je suis aujourd’hui. Je m’implique au sein de la communauté montréalaise et plus particulièrement au sein de la communauté africaine et avec les jeunes de tous les horizons et cela depuis 5 ans. En guise d’exemple; je suis co-fondatrice de SAYASPORA, une plateforme qui élèvent les vécus quotidiens des femmes et des jeunes africains issus la diaspora. À travers de Apathy is Boring, je donne des conseils pratiques aux jeunes pour la mise en œuvre de projets à impact social. L’objectif est de renforcer leurs capacités à devenir des citoyen.nes engagé.es. Mon travail communautaire m'a permis de réaliser que, plus que jamais, les jeunes se doivent de prendre leur place dans les instances décisionnelles et c’est avec enthousiasme que j’espère moi-même poursuivre dans cette voie!
