Help me get to Futurescapes

$1,170 of $1,500 goal

Raised by 27 people in 1 month
My name is Jennifer Willis. I am the author of the Valhalla/Rune Witch books (urban fantasy), MARS series (sci-fi/romance), and short stories and essays. I am also the writer behind the Northwest Love Story series in The Oregonian, telling real-life love stories.

I am asking for help to fund my participation in the Futurescapes Writers Workshop taking place in Utah in April 2018. For detailed information about this workshop and faculty, please visit: http://workshop.futurescapescontest.com/

This competitive workshop offers an average student-to-faculty ratio of 5:1 and matches attending writers with faculty authors, editors, and agents. The intensive Futurescapes schedule includes manuscript small critique groups, query letter and synopsis work, craft discussion and learning, writing sessions, and the opportunity for close mentorship with pro faculty.

Learning opportunities like these are where even pro authors go to continue pushing and working on their craft, and a workshop like Futurescapes is poised to be a true game-changer for my career. As someone who struggles with chronic illness (dysautonomia) and chronic pain (daily migraine), I have difficulty working steadily. I am unable to hold a regular job, and some days I’m unable to do anything at all. While a challenge in itself, this also puts writers workshops out of my financial reach.

I have been writing professionally for more than twenty years, focusing mostly on non-fiction until 2011. As an author, it’s my job to tell stories that entertain, challenge, comfort, and inspire, and I take that charge seriously. I am constantly looking for ways to improve my craft so that I may be of better service. I’m hoping you’ll help me as I reach for this next rung.

The funds for this campaign will cover:
* workshop tuition
* accommodation and meals
* ground transportation

Funds raised in excess of the campaign goal will be put toward ongoing publication efforts.

I humbly offer the following rewards for your generous contributions:

any amount: mention in the acknowledgments of a new book to be released in 2018

$10: an ebook copy of Hidden Magic, the forthcoming prequel to the Valhalla/Rune Witch series to be released in 2018.

Hello! I apologize for being so quiet. There have been some health-related and other challenges of late, and I'm having to play catch-up.

I'm in the process now of tracking campaign donations and rewards, and I'll be contacting donors in the coming days about making arrangements. If you've not heard from me within the next week, please get in touch to ensure that I've not somehow dropped you off my list! Rather than post my email address here, probably the best way to contact me is through my website: jennifer-willis.com.

Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed!

Holy cheese sticks! This is actually happening.

I'm getting set now to start withdrawing funds for the Futurescapes tuition (to secure my place). I'm almost at a place where I can book my flights, too, and I'm hopeful that the rest will fall into place from there.

Thank you all so very much for helping to make my participation in this workshop a reality.

Here's a blog post about the making of the campaign video, for anyone who's curious:

Wow! I am overwhelmed by and so grateful for the tremendous response to this campaign so far.

I've had a difficult week health-wise and haven't gotten to do much in the way of promotion, and I am heartily surprised by your encouragement and support. I'm beginning to think I might actually make it to the Futurescapes workshop, with the aim of learning and growing as a writer and storyteller.

Thank you so much for helping me to get this far. Your donations and comments mean a great deal to me.
