Hi, my name is John. I worked 18 years in street sweeping but over the past year my health has declined to the point where I haven’t been able to work. I’ve been dealing with severe diabetic neuropathy in my legs, mobility problems, shortness of breath with exertion, uncontrolled diabetes and sleep apnea. My doctors have documented that my mobility is limited and I’m in the process of getting a handicap placard to help me stay safe when I’m out walking. I also need a forearm bariatric rollator to help me walk safely and prevent falls but I haven’t been able to get one yet.
Since January, I’ve been living in my car after losing my housing because I could no longer afford rent. For a while, I was sleeping in different parking lots, not knowing where I was or if anyone would know if I had a medical emergency. Thankfully, a friend offered me a spot on their property so someone knows where I am and can help if something happens. It’s not easy, but it’s safer than being alone and vulnerable.
Right now I rely on Medicaid’s medical transportation to get to my appointments. They provide it for free and I’m grateful for it but I’ve had three different times where the driver never showed up. Each time I missed appointments that I waited months for. Because of that, having my own car running is not just convenient—it’s the only way I can make sure I get to the doctors who are trying to help me. My car is nonfunctional because the battery is completely dead and needs to be replaced. On top of that, the car is unregistered so even if I replace the battery I still can’t legally drive it until I get it registered again.
I’m asking for help with: car registration, a new car battery, a forearm bariatric rollator for mobility, and basic necessities (toilet paper, deodorant, hygiene items, etc.) that EBT doesn’t cover. I bless every person who reads this whether you give or not. The Lord loves all, and I’m grateful for anyone who takes a moment to hear my story. May God bless you and keep you. Have a blessed day.
