Help Margaret's Recovery After Tragic Accident

Donation protected
On Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 7:48 a.m., 63-year old Margaret Hardaway was hit by two crashing cars while waiting to catch a bus at the northwest corner of Euclid Avenue and East 260th street in Euclid, OH. Suddenly and without warning, a car traveling northbound in the wrong lane on Richmond Road sped through a red light and crashed into a car that was traveling westbound through a green light on Euclid Avenue. The vehicle that was struck lost control and traveled onto the curb and sidewalk striking Margaret.  She landed on the hood of the car which continued to travel until it hit a parked car, resulting in Margaret being thrown from the hood of the vehicle onto the concrete pavement. The entire accident was captured on dashcam and gas station video. It happened so fast that she had no time to react.

As a result of the accident, Ms. Hardaway sustained several life-threatening injuries, including a broken pelvis and punctured bladder; multiple fractures in both legs; a punctured artery in her leg; a broken clavicle; injury to her cervical spine, and multiple contusions on her body. In addition, she sustained damage to several tendons in her legs which had to be repaired, as well as injury to her ribs and lungs. Margaret has undergone 3 surgeries to-date and suffered significant blood loss due to the pelvic, bladder and artery injury in one of her legs.  She was transfused with 4 units of blood in one of the surgical procedures. Margaret was in-and-out of consciousness and remained on a ventilator for several days after the accident; fighting to survive her injuries. She remains hospitalized and does not remember what happened.

In a FOX8 News I-Team exclusive which aired on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, I-Team reporter Peggy Gallek shared Margaret’s tragic story and shared the horrifying video from the accident https://fox8.com/2019/03/19/woman-nearly-killed-in-crash-caught-on-camera/. In the report, Euclid Police told Ms. Gallek that no charges have been filed and stated that they are still investigating. WOIO 19 reporter Brian Duffy shared a broader perspective of the accident including a 911 call from a driver who witnessed the crash and additional video from the gas station located across the street (http://www.cleveland19.com/2019/03/22/woman-standing-corner-euclid-severely-injured-during-car-crash/).  In his report, which aired on Thursday, March 21 at 10pm, Mr. Duffy sums it up best when he states, “Margaret Hardaway had no chance to get out of the way.”

It is only through the many prayers and well wishes from family, friends and strangers, the quick action of witnesses, and the expertise of the surgical team, trauma team and nurses involved in her care that Margaret managed to survive her injuries. However, she now faces a long and painful recovery. Doctors advise that she faces long-term rehabilitation at a skilled nursing facility. She is unable to walk and must have multiple care-givers assist her with standing, sitting and everyday activities. She will need to learn to walk again. Currently, there is no timetable on how long this will take.

The start of Margaret’s skilled nursing care and rehabilitation have been halted by her lack of financial means. She is unable to be moved to a facility because she cannot afford the care. Margaret will receive her last paycheck on March 29. She has no health insurance, no long-term care insurance, and does not drive so she has no car insurance.  She is unable to pay for the skilled nursing care that is needed. Like so many others, Margaret’s income as a housekeeper did not pay enough to cover all of her living expenses (food, rent, utilities, medical costs and transportation). Yet, she does not qualify for Medicaid and Medicare.  Before the accident, Margaret had been helping to support her elderly mother each month. She now faces insurmountable medical expenses in addition to working to recover from her injuries.

Margaret is a devout Christian and active church member. She brings an infectious smile, ray of kindness and wonderful spirit to everyone she knows and meets.

All of your donations and support will go towards paying for the skilled nursing care, rehabilitation and medical costs associated with her care.
