Help Marc Fight ALS

$77,847 of $75,000 goal

Raised by 316 people in 12 months
In 2013, Marc Bennett, father of Ryan and Asher and beloved husband of Allyson, was diagnosed with ALS and his world changed forever. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, progressively affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The death of motor neurons impacts the control of voluntary muscles. It is characterized by having stiff muscles, muscle twitching and gradually worsening weakness due to the failing of the body’s muscle system. There is currently no treatment or cure for this debilitating disease and ultimately leads to complete paralysis. Individuals diagnosed with ALS in Marc’s age group typically see a life expectancy of 2-5 years. Fortunately, Marc’s disease has progressed more slowly resulting in both blessings and challenges.

How you can help:

This GoFundMe campaign has been established by his neighbors and friends to help Marc in his fight with ALS and improve his quality of life as his disease progresses. This campaign is focused on raising the funds needed to purchase a new or used van converted to have a ramp for wheelchair access, occasional in-home care,  and to make necessary bathroom modifications for their home.

Marc is a loved clinical psychologist and had been a very proud provider for his family. His loss of income has strained family finances. At a time Marc is needing even more demanding care, Allyson is working hard to maintain the household and to earn what money she can working part time. Marc is not the kind of person who is comfortable asking for support, but now he needs our help.

Sharing this GoFundMe page link with your family, friends, and contacts on Facebook and other social media means everything at this time!

ALS is a terrible disease for a person of any age, but Marc is still young, and he and his wife Allyson have two young boys to raise together, so they are doing everything in their power to live as normal a life as possible. Marc is working with some of the world's leading ALS researchers and clinicians. Due to the work of many ALS organizations, the prospects for the future have never been brighter. We all have hope ... hope for a future without ALS.

We would like to thank you in advance for any financial support you may be able to provide, as well as your continued prayers and positive thoughts. Know that 100% of the proceeds from this site will go to the Bennett’s.

On behalf of Marc, Allyson, Ryan, and Asher and those who love them, our sincere thank you.

We are so happy to report that we finally completed construction on our bathroom remodel. Just in time to celebrate the holidays and bring in the New Year! Although it took longer than expected, we are so grateful it is now finished and meeting Marc’s needs as we had hoped.

It’s hard to believe that less than a year ago Marc had become mostly homebound and that it had become increasingly difficult for him to use the bathrooms in our home. With the funds you all provided, Marc is now able to get out and about in our accessible van (going to the movies with our nine-year-old is a favorite activity), and live in our home with far greater ease. We were even able to take an overnight trip to Disneyland (thanks to a dear friend) and also a summer road trip to Arizona. More recently, the van became absolutely essential when we were forced to evacuate from our home due to the Woolsey Fire. Not sure what we would have done without it!

We cannot thank you all enough for making this possible. We are still completely overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we received and the impact it has had on our family and our day to day lives. A special shout out to our group of friends who matched donations dollar for dollar at the end of the campaign to help us meet our final goal – a goal we thought was unobtainable! And finally, our deepest thanks to Terry and Lorie Paulson and Matt and Sandy Wiltshire who launched this campaign on our behalf…we are forever grateful to the four of you for your help and support.

Due to a glitch with GoFundMe, our last two updates were not posted via email. We’ve been told the problem has been corrected, so we’re sending the message again here:
A group of dear friends, who wish to remain anonymous, have offered to match all new donations, dollar for dollar, until our campaign goal is reached. With this matching campaign, we only need to raise $1,825 dollars to reach our $75,000 goal. Big or small, every donation counts! Thank you so much for your contributions and supporting us along the way. We couldn’t have come this far without the help of so many!

We can’t say enough about how much our family is enjoying the new van. Over the kids’ spring break we were able to go to parks, restaurants, and get out to visit friends and family. Last weekend, Marc was able to attend Ryan’s school music festival which would not have been possible without our new wheels.

As we close in on selecting a contractor for our bathroom modification, we’ve been approached by a group of dear friends with the following offer to help us reach our goal. We are forever grateful.

From a group of Anonymous Donors:

Dear Marc & Allyson,

We’ve been watching your GoFundMe efforts closely, rooting you on, and feeling deeply moved by the generosity of so many friends, family members, and kind strangers, too! As the donation needle moved higher and higher, we were thrilled to see the first photos of your conversion vehicle, knowing that it so greatly enhances your ability to go do things as a family.

At the moment, you guys are $6375 shy of your $75,000 goal – we want to help you get all the way there so that you can also do the bathroom remodel without having to make significant compromises.

A group of us have joined together to get half of the remaining $6375 pledged. In other words, we have $3200 available for you to use as a "Dollar-for-Dollar Match" for any new donation dollars that come in from now until the end of April. If $3200 new donation dollars come in, we’ll match every single one of those, and you’ll be all the way home to $75,000.

ANY amount counts! If someone donates a new $250, within hours we’ll post a $250 matching donation. If someone donates a new $5, within hours we’ll post a $5 matching donation.

Our hope is that those who have already been so generous in supporting this effort will reach out to their loved ones, as well. We hope to band together to lift our beloved friends up anew, bring this campaign to the finish line, and fully deliver you some much-needed relief and comfort!
