Let me get right to the point. Absolute honesty has been my thing lately, and with the situation that I’m in currently, this kind of vulnerability is required. It is really hard for me to ask for money, especially on a forum as public as this, but I thought that I had nothing to lose in this case except for a little bit of my dignity. I hope you will read my cause below and appreciate how much it took for me to publish this in the first place.

My name is Lucy Crelli, and I am a social designer who recently graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design having studied Apparel Design with a concentration in Gender, Sexuality, and Race. I am passionate about social justice and community building, and I focus particularly on gender equity and women’s rights. I have a background in community organizing, service-learning, sexual assault prevention, sexual health education, intercultural education, and human-centered design. Aside from my own personal artistic practice, I am building a career applying design-thinking strategies to the pressing issues of today, which brings me to this GoFundMe…

I have had the great fortune of being awarded a 3 month creative design sabbatical in Pakistan working with a design strategy firm called IDEATE Innovation this September-November, 2018. IDEATE is Pakistan’s leading Human-Centered Design firm which helps organizations in designing great services, products, and experiences for their users. During my time there, I will be contributing and learning as a User Experience Designer in Islamabad working on a project that aims to design intervention/s for the unmet contraceptive and counseling needs of women and adolescent girls who perform a medical abortion outside of health facilities. In this project we will investigate the larger context of where, when, how and why women/girls pursue medical abortions to terminate an unwanted pregnancy, and then based on the discovered insights, we will prototype intervention/s to promote contraception after a medical abortion.

I am extremely excited for this opportunity as it is exactly what I want to be doing with my career. Even though it is a low budget project with a non-profit in the development sector, IDEATE is sponsoring my entire stay in Pakistan by covering all standard expenses which includes accommodation, transportation, meals, and health insurance. However, the flight cost to Pakistan and visa fees are my responsibility. Unfortunately, due to my current financial situation, I do not already have sufficient savings or the time to save. I currently work two part-time jobs which largely go straight towards my exorbitant student loan bills, and I am unable to receive financial help from my family. That is why I am turning to my community for help. Your donation would be going directly towards my flight and visa expenses. Any money that I do not spend on those two things will go towards my student loans for the months that I will be abroad.

Regardless of what you are able to contribute, I would be eternally grateful for your help. Every dollar counts, and even $5 will help get me closer to my goal. Your support means the world to me, and I know that this would not be possible without your help! Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you for being empathetic to my situation. If you are unable to donate, I would be very appreciative if you could share it with your own network and help to spread the word. If you have any further questions, please feel free to reach out to me via GoFundMe.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Dear wonderful donors,

It is with great disappointment that I must share that this project has been canceled. IDEATE and the NGO we would have been partnering with have been waiting on the government of Pakistan to approve the project, but after waiting for months (and having to keep pushing back the start date) they have decided to just call off the project entirely. I do not know if the lack of approval is due to the new government changing hands or for cultural/religious reasons, but either way, I am obviously upset about losing the opportunity.

IDEATE has offered to refund me for the plane ticket and the visa fee, but I have already also spent money on other supplies and preparations. I completely understand if any of you ask for a refund of your donation, because after all, I'm not going to be able to do what this GoFundMe is for. I am absolutely willing to refund you. I would however be appreciative if you left me the donation so that I can start down a new path and/or put it towards my student loan bills.

Thank you so much for believing in me, and I hope that I can encounter a similar opportunity soon. If you are interested in my work, please check out my website at www.lucillecrelli.com to see where I go next.

Best,
Lucy

Hi everyone! Let me thank you again for your generosity... I would not be able to do this without you. I also have two updates:

1) I got my visa! Things are very real now. I have actual proof that I'm allowed into the country now.
2) I still cannot buy my plane tickets yet though, because it seems that my start date will be pushed back. This is helpful, however, because now I have more time to fundraise and plane tickets will be cheaper!

Please keep sharing and spreading the word! I am so grateful for each and every one of you.
