How selfless can you be?  My brother-in-law Felipe saw a stranger tumbling onto the subway tracks and after running to tell the MTA clerk he jumped down on the track and pulled the guy to safety.

NY Daily News article about the incident:

Unfortunately the incoming train was not able to stop quick enough and the two were hit and dragged over forty feet. Felipe's shin was shattered by the impact and we were worried he might lose his leg. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where the medical staff managed to save his leg. The man who fell into track is also expected to survive thanks to Felipe's courage and quickness.

His second day in the hospital Felipe had surgery on his leg to insert a metal rod and three screws. He's in a lot of pain, but in positive spirits and his main concern is missing work at the Midtown restaurant where he is a vital team member.

His job is physical and he does not have insurance. His father, brothers and the rest of the family want him to rest and stay off his leg until it heals properly.  We realize that in the next few months he will need extra support which is why we are reaching out to family and friends.  Please contribute whatever you can spare, whether it's $5 or $50 we are grateful!  Please leave a note of encouragment for Felipe.

We love you, tío Felipe!  We miss you. Feel better soon!

Felipe had a very special visitor at the hospital today, his niece Susana. He was so happy to spend time with the little cutie (and her parents). Today he got a procedure done on his leg and tomorrow there's another one scheduled.

To help lift his spirits we read aloud the messages of support from the crowdfunding page. Felipe was so touched and grateful to all you generous people. He said he's relieved that he won't need to worry about paying rent or having to move out of his apartment once he leaves the hospital.

Thank you so much for all your contributions and words of encouragement. Please share our campaign on Facebook and help to spread the word!
