Local Hero Saves Stranger's Life
NY Daily News article about the incident:
Unfortunately the incoming train was not able to stop quick enough and the two were hit and dragged over forty feet. Felipe's shin was shattered by the impact and we were worried he might lose his leg. He was taken to a local hosiptal where the medical staff managed to save his leg. The man who fell into track is also expected to survive thanks to Felipe's courage and quickness.
His second day in the hospital Felipe had surgery on his leg to insert a metal rod and three screws. He's in a lot of pain, but in positive spirits and his main concern is missing work at the Midtown restaurant where he is a vital team member.
His job is physical and he does not have insurance. His father, brothers and the rest of the family want him to rest and stay off his leg until it heals properly. We realize that in the next few months he will need extra support which is why we are reaching out to family and friends. Please contribute whatever you can spare, whether it's $5 or $50 we are grateful! Please leave a note of encouragment for Felipe.
We love you, tío Felipe! We miss you. Feel better soon!

His leg is healing well. He is not able to put any weight on it yet but soon he's going to have the fun project of learning to walk again.
I'll withdraw the funds from GoFundMe and then present Felipe with a check so he can pay his rent and take care of any other expenses.
Our hearts are filled with so much love and gratitude for all your support, the donations, and all the wonderful comments.
Muchas gracias por toda su ayuda. Thank you for all your help!
When we showed him the video he was really touched. He loved it!
The update is: Felipe is doing great. The doctors performed another surgery on his leg (including a large skin graft) and it went well. Now they are getting ready to start physical therapy so Felipe can learn to use his "new" leg as it continues to heal.
Felipe would like to send huge thanks and appreciation to everyone who has contributed. He said that just knowing that this support is here has helped him tremendously in staying positive even as he faces a long and painful recovery.
We are so close to our fundraising goal! Please share this campaign within your networks.
Muchas gracias. Thank you so much!
To help lift his spirits we read aloud the messages of support from the crowdfunding page. Felipe was so touched and grateful to all you generous people. He said he's relieved that he won't need to worry about paying rent or having to move out of his apartment once he leaves the hospital.
Thank you so much for all your contributions and words of encouragement. Please share our campaign on Facebook and help to spread the word!
