Help Ken Conquer Cancer

I am writing this on behalf of two of the strongest people I have ever met, my sister, Kait and her husband, Ken DiAmico. They are the amazing parents to Ella (4) and Harper (2). Last March, they experienced something that no parent should ever have to experience - they gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Avery Elizabeth, only having to say goodbye to her a few hours after delivery. Kait and Ken persevered through this incredibly devastating time through their faith and love for each other.

This fall, they received the exciting news that they were expecting their first boy, Bryce, in late June! Ken was beginning to get busy with his new contracting business, Kait was doing well with her pregnancy and the two girls were keeping them as busy as ever. Everything seemed to be back on track.

On Wednesday April 24, 2019 their world came crashing down, Ken was diagnosed with a very rare type of cancer, Adrenocortical Carcinoma. They found a massive tumor which is compressing his inferior vena cava and the floor of the right atrium of his heart. Due to the complexity of its location & size of the tumor, it must shrink prior to proceeding with surgery to remove it.

After meeting with several doctors and completing a multitude of tests over the last week, he will begin chemotherapy on Monday May 6th. This is the start of a long 6 week course, and nearly approaching the due date of their baby boy. After the 6 weeks, they will repeat the imaging for Ken to reevaluate the tumor size. If it responds to the chemotherapy and the tumor shrinks, he will then undergo massive surgery to remove the tumor, his kidney, and bypass the inferior vena cava. If it remains too big, they will repeat another 6 weeks of chemotherapy, and go from there.

This is the beginning of quite a long road for Kait, Ken and their family. Ken is the primary breadwinner & is unable to currently work due to ongoing treatment. Kait is due to deliver Bryce in late June and will also need time to recover prior to returning to her clients as a hairdresser and makeup artist.

Kait & Ken will be facing significant challenges in the coming months. To ease the financial burden of treatment, medical bills, a new baby, and incidentals that will arise without question during this difficult time, we are raising funds to help with expenses. We want to ease one less worry for Ken & Kait so they can focus on Ken’s treatment and their family. Please keep them in your thoughts & prayers.

Update #3 - 7/7/2019:

Bryce has arrived! Kait delivered Bryce at 9:46 in the morning on July 2nd. Unfortunately, Ken was unable to be at the hospital due to his decreased immune system & concern for contracting an illness. But thanks to FaceTime, Ken was able to see his beautiful wife and son right after delivery! Both Kait and Bryce are now home and doing great! Ella and Harper cannot get enough of “baby brother” & are absolutely loving being big sisters already!

As for an update on Ken - he received a CT scan after his second round of chemotherapy. Unfortunately, the tumor has not begun to shrink, but we are remaining optimistic because it also showed no further growth or spreading of the cancer. He has since completed round 3 of chemo and is set to begin round 4 on Wednesday July 10th. Again, once round 4 is complete, he will receive repeat imaging to determine the status of the tumor & the next steps.

Other than feeling tired, Ken is doing well and his spirits remain high! The fluid retention in his stomach that he was previously dealing with has decreased, which has made him much more comfortable at home.

Again, Kait and Ken appreciate all the love & support from all family, friends and even complete strangers! They will continue to fight this terrible disease together, with a new bundle of joy to help cheer dad on!

Update #2 - 6/1/2019:

Thank you again to everyone for your generous donations, thoughts and prayers for Kait, Ken and their family!

Ken had a rough two weeks after his first round of chemotherapy due fluid retention in his abdomen from the tumor. After draining nearly 6 liters of fluid this past week, he is much more comfortable and is getting around easier. He completed round 2 of chemo on Thursday (5/31) like an absolute champ. Other than being tired, his spirits are good! We are anxiously awaiting his repeat CT scan, which is scheduled for 6/14, to see if the tumor has responded. He is tentatively scheduled for round 3 of chemo on June 19, as the plan is to shrink the tumor as much as possible prior to proceeding with surgery.

As for Kait, she continues to be his backbone through this process and she truly amazes us everyday. We are also highly anticipating little Bryce’s arrival! He will be entering the world within the next 4 weeks and we all cannot wait to meet this blessing!

See pictures below:

Thankfully Kait is in the hair business to help Ken with the new do! As expected, he is rockin’ it!

And a big shout out to Ella for helping dad stay stylish with his new orange tie just in time for Father’s Day!

Update #1 - 5/6/2019:
Ken began chemotherapy today at Fox Chase Cancer Center with his #1 supporter by his side! He is already crushing it! Ken’s sense of humor hasn’t gone anywhere & the nurses are sure appreciating it! He has two more days of treatment this week & is looking forward to a two week break prior to starting his second round! Please continue to keep Ken, Kait and their growing family in your thoughts and prayers!
