Help Keep Lucky Lucky

Meet my baby, one of the smartest and most talkative cats I've ever met: Lucky. Lucky is extremely sweet and produces a variety of noises in what sounds like syllables. He's very smart, a puzzle-solver, a lap cat, and one of my best friends.

Lucky is in trouble. He isn't producing or releasing urine and may have bladder stones that could cause a fatal blockage or, heaven forbid, a tumor on his bladder. Tests have been inconclusive.

How Lucky Got Lucky
Ten years ago, I was working at PetSmart on a Sunday evening, which was not my usual shift, when someone brought in a filthy, bloodied kitten who was dragging his back right leg. They said they'd found him on the side of the road outside, and they wanted the store to take him — obviously we weren't a vet and didn't have a Banfield at that location, and most of the shelters and vets were closed because it was a Sunday evening. The only shelter that was open was one that simply euthanized sick animals. I volunteered to take the kitten home and try to get him some help.

When the vet examined the kitten the next day, he discovered that his pelvis was broken in five places and the nerves to his leg were severed.

Someone had likely thrown him from a car.

The vet predicted that he would never use that leg and that it would have to be amputated eventually, because dragging it causes infection.

The kitten was too weak to eat or drink, so I bottle fed him for weeks. We bonded, and I decided to keep him.  Amazingly, he started putting pressure on his back leg and, slowly but surely, was able to use it. He became a typical rambunctious kitten, leaping and jumping into everything. Because it was so fortunate that I'd worked that shift and happened to be at the store when someone dropped him, because he miraculously recovered from his injury. Naturally, I named him Lucky.

What Lucky Means to Me
Lucky has been with me through some of the hardest times of my life. My roommate at the time when I adopted him was a manipulative, abusive bully and tried to steal him when I was moving out. I've never been as much as a lioness as when I went to defend my cub. Then, I fell into an abusive relationship. Lucky was always there for me to cuddle and comfort me when I was suffering. As I escaped my abuser, my life improved and I went on to finish graduate school and get a good job, Lucky was the mainstay in my life, always cheerfully greeting me when I came home from work or class. He loves to play with "bird," which is any toy on a string, and he loves "cake," which is wet food. He knows these words and has a special meow just for me, which I guess is what he's named me.

Lucky's Health Problems
Sadly, Lucky has always had health problems. He is a sensitive cat, allergic to a lot of stuff and susceptible to stress. A single flea bite can send him into a bout of dermatitis. A couple of years ago, he developed bladder stones, or crystals, and was unable to pass urine. We got him some help just in time to avoid a total blockage, which would have been fatal, and he started a regimen of pH-lowering food. We've successfully treated him, and when he went to the visit in March 2019, the vet praised us for what appeared to be a clean bill of health.

What's Happening Now
On Sunday, July 21, we noticed that Lucky was frequenting the litterbox but that nothing was coming out. Concerned about a blockage, we took him to the vet, but results are inconclusive. Initial tests, antibiotics, and pain-relieving medicine have already cost us $625. We're waiting for the results of X-rays and bloodwork. Best case scenario is that he's developing a blockage and might avoid eating or drinking, causing other health problems. Worst case scenario is a tumor that could be inoperable.

What Your Support Will Mean
We need to be able to afford an ultrasound and surgery if it comes to that, along with all of Lucky's medications. It's already been a struggle for me and Lucky's dad, Dan, because between my own health issues, a major move to a new city, and Dan's inconsistent hours at work, we've had a lot of expenses and have been living paycheck-to-paycheck. We have meager savings but not enough to cover these bills. Lucky is everything to us and we would gladly give all our money to save his life: but that's not enough.

Anything you can give helps, even $5.

Thank you.
