COLLEGE FUND For Better A Life for June's Family

Donation protected
HI. I'm June Westerfield and I need money to help get my Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science. What you should know about me:

I am 45 years old. For the past nine years (8 married) I've been with the most amazing man.  He is disabled and for the past 7 years I have not been able to work outside the home.  I can  only leave him alone for an hour or two at a time, and only very rarely.  Mostly I go out once or twice a month for groceries.  Sometimes I can't even do that much and have often had to have groceries delivered or had to cancel appointments (hair cuts, doctors, and other important business) if he is having a particularly bad day.   I'm not telling this for sympathy.  I do not in any way feel sorrow or put-upon for our circumstances.  Things are what they are, and we are happy.  BUT... you need to know the circumstances so that you know why it is so important for me to work from home and why furthering my education is ESSENTIAL AND IMPERATIVE TO MY FAMILY'S WELL-BEING.

I'm a freelancer and I do a little bit of everything.  I am a writer of both fiction and non-fiction.  I do graphic design (from everything from logos, to promotional ads, to book covers and interior book designs).  I also design and sell greeting cards and other merchandise. I've designed several day planner books (for writers, designers and other freelancers).  I design WordPress websites, mostly for authors, but also for small businesses when I can get the work.  I also do other freelance/work for hire/independent contractor jobs in web research and every other area possible. While I did finish high school and had some college (in Office Technology), the only skill I have to work from home are 100% self-taught (via tutorials, free online courses, and JUST DOING, etc.)

The problem is IT IS NOT ENOUGH.  I'm lucky if I average $30 a month TOTAL from book sales (and I have more than 10 books in print).  Freelance work in website design and cover art design is also not as lucrative as it sounds.  I made less than $3000 last year, total.  I'm swallowing my pride and putting these figures out there to show that I really need a little help.

I spend 14-16 hours a day at my computer (and sometimes more) trying to find work and doing work as it trickles in for pennies on the hour.  The problem is that because of the skills I have and the fact that they are self-learned my "niche" is working for independently published authors.  Unfortunately they rarely have the money to spend on quality work and I either do work for 1/4 of its worth, or I don't get work at all.  There are many remote-work jobs out there I'm "technically" qualified for, but they require a bachelors degree in computer science.

We live off my husband's disability check (Less than $1000 a month) and whatever I can bring in.  We get no government assistance.  My husband's medicine, which is not paid for by his insurance, is $200 a month.  There is a specialist doctor he has to see every six months that his insurance doesn't pay for and that cost is $200 each visit.

Our very supportive family helps, but they can only do so much.

I NEED TO WORK FULL TIME OR GET BETTER FREELANCE JOBS.  The only way to do that is to get my computer science degree.

I have enrolled in University of the People.  It is a tuition free, accredited school at which I can get my Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science.  With this degree I can turn many of the skills I already have into a more lucrative job.  There are MANY remote (work from home) programming and computer science based jobs that I would be qualified with my degree.

The cost of the degree is a $100 fee per class.  That is $4000 TOTAL for a four year degree.  If I take 2-3 classes per 9 week term, it would equal out to $100-$150 per month.  (3 classes per term gets me done in 2 3/4 years instead of 4).  The problem is, even at that low cost, it is way out of reach for us.  I do not currently have any long term freelance project that could guarantee me $100 a month.  That $100 a month would mean not getting my husband's medicine.

EDIT: As money started to roll in, I started getting ready for school and realized that there were supplies and things that I need beyond just payment for the class exams that would actually add up term by term.  Because of this, I've upped the total needed to raise to $6000.  This will help us with other fees, supplies, etc.

I applied for a partial scholarship, but I was denied due to lack of funds.  (Please see updates below to see how I reacted to the news--it wasn't good.)

I will still be working while going full time to school...because we need EVERY CENT I can make.  And that is okay.  I'M NOT AFRAID OF HARD WORK.

If you have a website that needs designed, and you want me to do that instead of you donating here I'M UP FOR IT.  If you are an author and you need cover work or interior book design (ebook or print) I'm up for it!

But if you  don't have work for me, but will donate, know that it will be put to use to get my degree so I can work  harder and do better for my family.

This degree means security for my family.  It means life for us.  And I thank you for every penny, from the bottom of my heart.
