 WASHINGTON, DC
I recently became friends with a man named Joel Markowitz.  For theater artists in the DC area, his name has become synonymous with DC Metro Theater Arts.  Over the last 5 years (long before we were personal friends) Joel has helped me to advertise, get shows reviewed, and taken the time to give me advice when I have gotten frustrated.  When I was with a theater company with a miniscule budget, he always helped me to "worked something out," because, as he says, he "likes to help out the little guy."

Now that I have gotten to know Joel a little bit better on a personal level, I have learned how passionate he is about that idea in every way.  Regardless of his personal struggles, he remains dedicated to helping others whenever he can.  And, when it comes to DCMTA, the man seriously runs himself ragged to get all of us - the big and little guys - exposure, listings, etc.

As many of you know Joel was recently diagnosed with ALS and is about to be overrun by mountains of bills.  His insurance will only help with a percentage of the costs and he will have to come up with everything else.  Unfortunately, the percentage he will be paying is high and good treatment is expensive.  This breaks my heart.  We cannot make him better and probably few of us can afford to pick up all of his medical bills, but if all of us little guys & gals kick in, we can make his life a little less stressful, and allow him to spend his time with his family, friends, and the theater (the man is a theater addict!)

So, please give $1, $13 or $100.  We all have limitations, but we are all part of a unique community and together we can help out a man who has helped us all.

Please share with anyone you think might like to make a donation.

Love,
Emily Canavan

Just an extra reminder of the May 1st Cabaret being held in Joel's honor. I don't know how many tickets are left, but I know they were well past 50% before the news story aired. So, if you want to go, I strongly suggest that you get your ticket(s) NOW.

VERY IMPORTANT: Please specify how many tickets you want to reserve in the comments section - even if you are only buying one. Please be specific.

Please note: 100% of donations made to this page AND the cabaret page will go directly to Joel.

Last bit of news about this page:
Our updated goal is $30,000!! I am confident we can raise this amount together!! We are already more than half-way there!

I started THIS site with a goal of raising $10,000. I knew Joel needed more, but I was not sure how many donors to expect. Eight days, and $8,000 later, I raised the goal to $20,000. The treatments and other medical costs that come with ALS are enormous.

Several people have contacted me during this process saying I should raise the goal amount. I am doing so now, but please know that if people donate MORE than the goal amount, then Joel gets MORE than the goal amount. I would LOVE to see the numbers surpass our newest goal!

Thank you again for your contribution and please continue to share this site with others.

I hope to meet some of you at the cabaret!!

Cheers,
Emily

In less than a week, our community has pulled together and raised over $8,000 to help with Joel's medical expenses!! He is beside himself with gratitude over this outpouring of support.

Joel and his doctors think his best treatment option is a very promising stem cell therapy. For this reason, I am raising our fundraising goal to $20,000. This is apparently the starting rate for this kind of treatment. The great news is we are already ALMOST HALF WAY THERE!!

Please share this with others and please contribute if you can!! All dollar amounts are welcome and appreciated.

If you are involved with a theater, production company, or are working on a show, please consider adding a link to the gofundme page on your home page, Facebook page or playbill.
