on behalf of Joel Markowitz
 WASHINGTON, DC
I recently became friends with a man named Joel Markowitz.  For theater artists in the DC area, his name has become synonymous with DC Metro Theater Arts.  Over the last 5 years (long before we were personal friends) Joel has helped me to advertise, get shows reviewed, and taken the time to give me advice when I have gotten frustrated.  When I was with a theater company with a miniscule budget, he always helped me to "work something out," because, as he says, he "likes to help out the little guy."

Now that I have gotten to know Joel a little bit better on a personal level, I have learned how passionate he is about that idea in every way.  Regardless of his personal struggles, he remains dedicated to helping others whenever he can.  And, when it comes to DCMTA, the man seriously runs himself ragged to get all of us - the big and little guys - exposure, listings, etc.

As many of you know Joel was recently diagnosed with ALS and is about to be overrun by mountains of bills.  His insurance will only help with a percentage of the costs and he will have to come up with everything else.  Unfortunately, the percentage he will be paying is high and good treatment is expensive.  This breaks my heart.  We cannot make him better and probably few of us can afford to pick up all of his medical bills, but if all of us little guys & gals kick in, we can make his life a little less stressful, and allow him to spend his time with his family, friends, and the theater (the man is a theater addict!)

So, please give $1, $13 or $100.  We all have limitations, but we are all part of a unique community and together we can help out a man who has helped us all.

Please share with anyone you think might like to make a donation.

Love,
Emily Canavan

To everyone who donated to Joel's gofundme page,

I am sad to share with you that Joel passed away yesterday, November 7th. He was surrounded by his family. I cannot tell all of you enough how much Joel appreciated the donations and the messages many of you posted on his page. He told me over and over how he couldn't believe so many people cared about him. I take a lot of comfort in knowing that he got that message loud and clear before he passed away.

I am pasting the information about the memorials his family are having that they shared in a DCMTA article that was posted today. I am also pasting the link to the article.

Thank you all again for all that you did.

Love,
Emily Canavan

I have not given an update on Joel's condition in a while. We all know how things go: life gets busy, we're wrapped up in our own worlds, and we somehow don't make time to see/communicate with the people we love. I am happy to report that I visited Joel this evening and I am SO glad I did. I wish I had good news about his health to share, but ALS is a vicious disease and he has a particularly nasty strain. What I CAN report is that Joel is one of the strongest people I know. As his mobility, speech, and motor skills are under siege from the ALS, Joel continues to get up, work on his website and spend time with loved ones. He doesn't speak as clearly or type as well as he did a few months ago, but the man has things to say and he continues to fight to be heard. Tonight his nurse asked him why he started DCMTA. He had to repeat his answer a few times before we understood it: "for the little guy," he said matter of factly. He didn't stop and think about it; he's a man on a mission.

He is trying all kinds of gadgets and gizmos to retain his independence and has a nurse who helps him out. I haven't looked up "gadgets and gizmos" on Amazon, but my guess is they get pricey and they add up. So, please consider donating for the first time or, perhaps, the second or third! But, just as importantly, consider either visiting Joel or sending him a message or email. I'm sure he would love to hear from all of you - his wide support network. Messages posted on this site are delivered directly to Joel. He has told me many times how amazing all of your notes left on this page make him feel.

You can probably tell that this update is being written in an emotional state. I am sad that Joel is not well. I wish, like all of you, that I could fix it. What is keeping me smiling, though, is that Joel is still a smart ass and jokester, a great storyteller, and his laughter is still infectious!! And, he continues to burn the midnight oil in the name of actors, theaters and the arts - of all sizes, shapes and colors. Today, especially, Mr. Joel Markowitz is my inspiration to put effort into this crazy art form and into the people and relationships that bring me joy. When I asked him how he got himself to get stuff done when he didn't want to or wasn't motivated, he replied simply "I just do it." Count on Joel to make what seems complicated and impossible, absolutely obvious and simple.

Cheers to All of You,
Emily Canavan

Thank you for letting us know and for your immense caring. It pleases me to know that the caring of others helped Joel through this struggle. On the day after his passing, I'm missing his exuberance, passion, energy, and the way he promoted actors and theaters regardless of how successful or well-known they are. I recall our editing a review in the wee hours. He was so dedicated. On a personal note, without this page and Joel, I'd never have met you, Emily. Joel helped people to connect. You are a gem and our connection means so much. R.I.P. Joel.
