Help Jhonnar's family in Venezuela

Donation protected
Our friend Jhonnar has returned to his family and found them with no food. His mother is also ill with very limited access to the medicine she needs. The economic and political crisis in Venezuela means that it is harder and harder to afford basic essentials.

We met Jhonnar through working with him at a children's holiday centre here in Sheffield. He has had to return to Venezuela since his visa has run out and he has been keeping us updated on his situation.

Jhonnar's family need money urgently to buy food and basic supplies. We are initially trying to raise enough to keep going them for approximately 3 months which would give Jhonnar the opportunity to organise coming back to the UK and work to provide for his family.

Jhonnar's dad is a pastor so any extra money that we raise will be used to help other people and families in their community. The crisis is ongoing and is likely to get worse so the money is needed within the next few weeks.

Cruz Verde - the community that Jhonnar’s family live in in Barcelona, Venezuela - is poor and malnourishment is a problem affecting many. The money you donate will primarily go towards buying food to feed his family and, by extension, his community. As a church pastor, Jhonnar’s father does his best running a project to give meals to others. When possible, food is bought in bulk, cooked and then distributed to give a meal usually to at least 100 people within a day or two. This is especially important work when one good meal a day is increasingly becoming a rarity.

Although food is the main priority, basic supplies are also in demand. Your money could also help towards buying soap, toothpaste and other toiletries. Again, through his father’s work as a pastor, your money could extend to provide for those in need in Jhonnar’s wider community.

If you are informed about the crisis in Venezuela then you might be aware that it is difficult to get money into Venezuela. The government have put controls in place which make transferring pounds from a British account to bolívares in a Venezuelan account almost not worth it. Charities are also finding it hard to gain access to Venezuela. We are, however, in a fortunate position. Jhonnar has a British account from his time here in the UK and he also has a friend who works buying and selling currency. Through this friend, Jhonnar can (legally) buy bolívares through the banks, using pounds, at the normal exchange rate. We would withdraw the donations and put it all into Jhonnar’s British account. From there, he would do the rest to get the money to his family.

We are glad that you have considered donating. We are passionate about helping those in the middle of the Venezuelan crisis as it directly affects our friend and is largely unreported in British media. We are glad for any donations and please ask questions if you feel the need.
