Help Homeless Wheelchair Woman

[This is being typed by a friend of Constance.]
Woman in late 60s, had a few fall accidents leading to torn ligaments. Doctors diagnosed the cause as a vitamin deficiency. Followup healthcare caused further damage and I ended up in a wheelchair.

Therapy has been sporadic for the last year and a half due to my homelessness.

Cataracts have developed during that time leaving me practically blind.

I need a secure housing arrangement for a year so I can get the cataract surgery and the prescribed physical therapy, so I can regain my strength and balance to be able to walk again.

The waiting list for housing assistance is long and at least two years out. People who are already housed on assistance have priority for wheelchair accessible units.  The money I am requesting is to allow me to prepay a year lease thereby precluding refusal to rent to me due to my paltry Social Security income, and also to cover medical needs.

I was living in my car, which was towed impounded and auctioned. All of my belongings were in that car including clothing, a walker, and $800 worth of custom fitted braces which had been paid for by Medicare and cannot be replaced through Medicare coverage. I attempted to attend the auction of my car, hoping to reclaim possession of my belongings but was misinformed of the date by the towing company and so missed that opportunity by a day.

My health is being further challenged by extremely cold weather. I have been sleeping in my wheelchair in doorways with occasional stays in an ADA compliant motel room paid for by family and generous strangers.

I have been searching for housing of any kind for more than a year and find the wheelchair a barrier, and some resistance to disabled people in a very tight housing market geared to students.

My computer use is restricted due to impaired vision so my children are helping me. My doctor has informed me the longer therapy is delayed the more likely there will be permanent disability.
