PLEASE NOTE;  The £2.6k raised for Hamaseh Tayari has been passed on to her.   All additional donations now will be passed on the Scottish Refugee Council.

From The Guardian, 28/1/2017

Hamaseh Tayari, a UK resident who holds an Iranian passport, has been on holiday in Costa Rica with her boyfriend for the last week. She was due to fly back to Glasgow, where she works as a vet, this morning but was denied entry onto the flight because her flight went via New York and she would need a transit visa, which was revoked.

Tayari, who grew up in Italy, has never experienced anything like this. She says: “This has really shocked me. We just discovered [what Trump did] at the airport when we went to check in. I want people to know that this is not just happening to refugees. I am a graduate and I have a PhD. It has happened to a person who is working and who pays tax.”

Tayari and her boyfriend are trying to find an alternative route home. A flight to Madrid on the 30 January will cost them £2,000 and they’ll still have to find a way from there to Glasgow. “We had been saving for months for this holiday and it will cost me a month’s salary just to get home,” she said.

“I am destroyed. I did not know that I could cry for so long. It feels like the beginning of the end. How this is possible? I am really afraid about what is going on.”

______________

We are still waiting for final confirmation, but we understand that Hamaseh is not stuck, and has been able to find alternative flights.  We are not sure if she is on her way home or not yet.  She has had to find £2, 600 to pay for these alternatives flights.   This is a huge amount of money to her.

Let's stick two fingers up to Trump and help out Hamaseh as a gesture of solidarity.

This Go Fund Me account links via Stripe to the Women for Independence bank account.   We will pass on every penny raised after fees by Stripe and GoFundMe  up to £2,600 to Hamaseh.  Anything raised above that will be passed on to the Scottish Refugee Council in further protest against Trump's policies.  No money will be retained by Women for Independence.

We have transferred £2.6k to Hamaseh's account. She has sent us a message which says;

This is amazing!
I would like to say thanks somehow to all of you and the people that contributed!
Thanks to get us back at home. Safe and sound and in peace!
Hamaseh and Alessio

As people are still making donations, we will leave it a few days before making an announcement of the final total raised and the size of the subsequent donation to the Scottish Refugee Council.

I think the desire not to leave my female partner alone, stranded, in a far-off city while I travel home as planned, might be seen as justification by some.

I deal with immigration cases. Whilst this is real mess, can we please take a step back and actually look at what is happening... Having checked the notes. http://ichef-1.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/A95B/production/_93855334_hamasehdeniedboarding.jpg 1. There was no reason for her boyfriend to have not travelled. He should have. His refusal to travel is without justification. 2. Assuming she has a point to point booking with united through to London, the liability fell on the airline to get her to destination - IE. Rebook her, via a reasonable route. It is not the PAX fault she is being denied boarding, and it will fall on the airline to ensure she can exit.

This action by Donald Trump does not represent the sentiments of the American majority. I apologize on behalf of the American majority for the actions of an illegitimate president.

As an american, I'm so sorry that you, Tayari, or anyone else has to put up with our new presidents insane orders. It's NOT our way; and many of us lament this sudden shift in our country. I'm hoping he won't last long.

People uniting in love and compassion can achieve so much more than those who try to fragment society with vitriol and hate. I love the fact that Women for Independence rallied the troops to help one of our fellow Scots in her hour of need.
