Help Haitians Build a School

$16,550 of $18,000 goal

Raised by 82 people in 10 months
What is the problem we want to solve?
In Didier, a small community in the Artibonite Valley in rural Haiti, the parents want to educate their children. They value education and see it as a path to a better life but, with no public school system in Haiti and being situated in a remote location, schools are not accessible to the estimated 600 children in the region. They have tried building with indigenous materials but that was not sufficient. They would like to build a well-constructed school for their children.

What have they done so far?
In 2013 VBC, a small organization of Haitians, wanted to help the children in this region by building a primary school. VBC’s funds were limited, so, with the help of the parents, they built a small school with banana leaf walls. All was well until the building collapsed in the rainy season. It was rebuilt in a more protected area, but the school is slowly deteriorating.

VBC decided they should build a permanent school with a good foundation and strong construction. They bought a piece of land and plans were made. The school will include six classrooms, an office, and a bathroom. They have raised over $13,000 to date and have put in the foundation. We have decided to set up this GoFundMe on behalf of VBC to raise $20,000 to complete the second phase of construction. This will support building three classrooms and allow them to open the school for teaching.

Who is managing this project?
VBC was founded after the earthquake in 2010 by Oliancy Charles and Francky Louis, local Haitian residents. The organization provides community support in the poorest regions of this district through a variety of projects for peasant women and children. By working together lives of the poorest in this area are transformed and basic human rights become a reality.
100% of the money will go directly to the building of this school and receipts will be tracked. Parents and other community volunteers are helping with this work. A generous donor has agreed to cover the GoFundMe fees so we can share all the money we raise. We will be able to visit the school during frequent visits to Haiti and can share news of progress.

Why do we want to help?
Oliancy and Francky are old friends we met when visiting Haiti. They are kind hardworking people who volunteer their time to help their neighbors. Most of the people in Didier are peasant farmers who struggle from day to day to provide for their families. They are acting on their aspiration of educating their children and we share the value placed on education. It strengthens the people and the country. These people are striving to improve their lives but have very limited resources so we want to help. Join us!

Please help build this school by donating and sharing their story with your friends on Facebook. Any size donation is welcome and much appreciated. An amount of money that may not be of consequence to us can make a difference in a country where most people live on less than $2.00 a day.

August 2018: A final push....The money raised has been sent to Haiti in several installments. Excellent progress has been made on the school and they are still aiming to get students using the building this fall. Check it out! Oliancy and Francky and the people in and around Didier are extremely grateful and excited to use the new school. We have been told that the generosity has inspired the community as a whole and they are motivated to work harder since it shows that there are people who care about them. So we pass on a huge THANK-YOU to all who contributed to this effort to date.
A group of local high school students traveled to Haiti with the Crosby Fund in April and hiked up to the school site to see how construction is going. Brynn McGlinchey, a rising senior at LOLHS who has helped with the fundraising, was on the trip. She summarizes her reflections on visiting the construction site below.
“I had been eagerly waiting to see the progress of the school in Didier since my visit to Haiti last spring. I was so impressed to see how much has been accomplished in a year. As we arrived to the work site we noticed a man trekking up and down the steep hill to deliver large rocks to Haitian masons. I was amazed to see this dedicated group of people working together in ninety degree heat to use the funds we have raised to build this school. As our group watched the building progress, students joined us, giggling and pointing at what will soon be their permanent school. Their enthusiasm showed their appreciation of this project and their excitement to learn in this new building.”

We were in Haiti in June and visited the school and were also amazed to see the workers lifting bricks and slapping cement with such vigor in the extreme heat and humidity. There are three classrooms and an office. Now they are starting on the roof and they also need to lay concrete on the floors and complete the walkway in front of the building. The remaining funds will not cover that work. We are looking to make a final effort to reach a goal of $18,000 to fill the gap. A generous donor has agreed to match the first $2,000 of the remaining gap so we are about $2500 from achieving that goal. We are excited to help them finish the school.
