Help Gazela Lead the Parade

What Happened?  Weather Happened!!!

January’s lengthy frigid weather spell struck hard in the engine room of Philadelphia’s historic Tall Ship Gazela.   After one of the coldest cold spells the Northeast has seen in a very long time, some crew members entered her engine room.  To their horror, they found extensive systems damaged from the cold.  Assessment and repairs are continuing and damage estimates exceed $15,000.  Our beloved sailing ship floats dead in the water until all repairs are made.

What is Gazela?

Gazela is a 1901 wooden hull, barkentine-rigged sailing ship.  Built in Portugal at 177 feet in length, she would sail from Portugal to the Grand Banks.  The crew would fish by hand from small boats, the way it was done when fishing was sustainable.  Gazela holds the title of Philadelphia’s resident tall ship, a piece of living history whose  presence graces the Philadelphia Waterfront for the engagement of Philadelphians and visitors.  She serves her city as a venue for classes, concerts, tours, school visits, shows, weddings, meetings and watching fireworks.  Her deck is a place where everyone is welcome and many come to learn hands-on maritime maintenance and preservation free of charge.   Gazela is supported by a group of passionate volunteers within the Philadelphia Ship Preservation Guild.   We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Collectively, we donate thousands of working hours per year to maintain and preserve Gazela through the seasons.

Can Gazela Lead the Parade?

In May, 2018, the Penn’s Landing waterfront will be abuzz with Sail Philadelphia Tall Ships festivities.  As Philadelphia’s resident tall ship, Gazela is slated to lead visiting tall ships in a parade-of-sail into her home port on the Delaware River.  Without her engine room systems up and running, Philadelphia’s tall ship will not be able to proudly lead her own city’s parade.

We Need You!

We are asking for your donation and support to help get Gazela ready for this very important event.  Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated.  Funds will go directly to the repairs needed to get her ready.
