Help Garry beat Cancer

Meet Garry…

Garry has been my best mate since the age of 8, he is married to his wonderful wife Jo (who is an amazing cook) and has two gorgeous daughters, Georgia and Harriet. Garry is the type of man that will do absolutely anything for you, and goes out of his way to help others; he is loved by family friends and neighbours.

In May this year, after what was thought to be a routine exam for acid reflux, Garry was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus and went through a rigorous course of chemotherapy; that unfortunately, failed to shrink his tumours, leaving surgery as his only option.

On July 19 he was admitted to hospital for major surgery, where the plan was to remove his cancerous oesophagus and replace it with a section of his bowel. The surgery took 8 hours and unfortunately, during this time the surgeon decided (owing to a previous operation) he could not connect the new oesophagus to Garry’s stomach and had to remove his whole stomach and connect the oesophagus directly to his lower intestine.

Initially, the surgery appeared to go well, however, after a week of moving back and forth from Intensive care (with a few very scary moments) it was identified that the replacement oesophagus had become infected and was dying; consequently, Garry was rushed back into surgery where the new oesophagus had to be removed; incurring another 8 hours of major surgery.

The result of this surgery has now left Garry with a bag inserted into the side of his neck to collect salvia and fluids from his mouth along with a feeding tube that connects directly into his lower intestine to sustain him; adding to this, Garry still doesn’t know for sure if he has beaten the cancer that all this surgery was meant to achieve.

The surgeons have said that in 3 months’ time, once he has completed another round of chemotherapy and is cancer-free they will look at options to attempt to reconstruct his oesophagus again by taking another piece of his bowel; this, of course, will then mean Garry having to undergo further major surgery repeating the procedures he has already undergone and reopening previously healed incisions.

Garry only has two weeks of sick-pay left to claim and is obviously unable to work during this period and financially provide for his family; although listening to him he would go back to work tomorrow!  His wife Jo needs to be by his side to care for him and the girls, this of course, will prevent her from working full time.

Hence, we are looking to support this very special man during such an extremely difficult period in his life by returning some of the love and kindness he regularly and unconditionally has given to others.

Therefore if you are able to help Garry, Jo and their girls until he is ‘back on his feet’ any donation would be greatly appreciated; however large or small.

Please note: any excess funds will be donated to the Cancer Unit at the Fiona Stanley Hospital, Perth, to support others facing the same struggle.

On Behalf of myself Garry, Jo, the girls and everyone else that knows and loves him, may I say a great big ‘Thank-you’.
