Help for the Ubowski Family

Hurricane Michael was a force of devastation. Directly in the line of fire were some very dear friends, Adam and Lori Ubowski and their three children. . Adam and Lori are music ministers at St. Dominic in Panama City, FL, and form the group "Out Of Darkness". They have spent their lives as music ministers, serving the church in many ways beyond just music ministry.

The Ubowski family evacuated, but their home and church both sustained massive damage. Currently they are living in a hotel with their three children, as their residence is non-livable. The school their children attend will also not be able to reopen doors for at least 90 days, and the church they have loved and prayed in will likely not reopen for sometime.

Their home insurance for hurricane damage is an extremely high deductible, and coupled with the expenses of hotel, food, and travel, they are under a lot of financial strain.

Thank you for any support you can give to this lovely family who has given so much. Our Shepherd will always supply our need, and often does so through the kindness of others. Your help will mean so much to this wonderful family.

Gratefully, Sarah Hart

Goodbye 2018...this is a bittersweet farewell.

To all of our generous supporters...friends, family, and those we have yet to meet...this is the first chance we've had to really scroll through and look at all of your names. And it is truly overwhelming. Tears are flowing, because as we say goodbye to 2018 and the bitter experience of Hurricane Michael, the way you've so generously reached out to help our family these past few months has been a humbling and sweet blessing.

Update on the House: Almost three months after Hurricane Michael we sit with a completely gutted interior. Studs, rafters, concrete, bathtubs, electrical wiring, and plumbing is about all that's left. Over Thanksgiving we were EXTREMELY grateful and relieved to get our new roof installed...your generosity made that happen so quickly by being able to access funds immediately for the deposit, which got us higher on the list for scheduling. The giant trash pile that accumulated in front of our house, comprised of our belongings and demo of our home, is finally gone. While seeing that pile disappear that served as a somewhat cruel reminder every time we drove up to the house felt great, it was also a moment of sad finality. Those things are now gone and this really did happen. Following the demo, the house has been treated for mold and we hope and pray they got all of it. We've managed to get a trustworthy interior contractor (that we're very excited about) to show up and agree to give a quote. Praying that there will be no hiccups with our insurance approving his quote. We would be most grateful for your prayers in this area!

Update on Us: The kids have been coping alright as far as we can tell...we're amazed by their resilience. There have been tears, but their attitude has been good. We're extremely grateful for their school which has helped provide some desperately needed consistency. We are also slowly seeing some of their activities return...like dance and soccer. For us adults...we're trying to provide as much "normal" as possible for the kids while also navigating the mental and emotional toll this has already taken on us. The depression from PTSD is suffocating and tasks that would normally seem simple take twice as long or we feel too overwhelmed to even attempt. Recently we feel so behind on everything, and feel that we're letting others down. We would appreciate your prayers in this area, too. We enjoyed a different but nice Christmas together. While we prepared our kids for a very "slim" Christmas, some "elves" in the form of college friends and church friends made sure we had a tree and some things to put under it. This made Christmas this year so unexpectedly special for us! We're also looking forward to physically getting away from the destruction around us for a couple days next week due to the generosity of family members who helped us renew our season passes to Disney World and helped with other trip expenses as a Christmas gift. These little trips are truly the best medicine, because getting out of here reminds us that there is a world beyond Panama City that's not living daily with devastation.

Update on our Church: St. Dominic was able to get a large tent to have Mass in and a couple of portables to call our "offices". The tent was placed in the parking lot, along with some pink porta-potties, and some days we had to walk through puddles during Masses. However, we recently acquired a bathroom trailer placed nearby, windows, a floor, and a beautiful canvas replica of the stained glass from our sanctuary that wasn't destroyed. Who knew a tent could be so fancy? There are still so many unknowns there, and we have seen a third of our congregation unable to return. Adam and I have been placed on the Building Committee, and there are some exciting possibilities with the rebuilding of our campus, but it will take some time.

Update on our Community: Panama City continues to suffer. So many are still without new roofs, waiting on demo, looking for temporary housing, and it's rare to find anyone who is rebuilding already. One of our hospitals laid off 800 people right before Christmas and our mall has permanently closed causing 500 people to lose their jobs. In our neighborhood alone, we've already lost 7 or 8 families due to military orders elsewhere since our nearby military base was destroyed. Some of these neighbors are close friends, and the grief of loss is compounding. Wifi has returned for most, but not all. Working street lights are rare, and roads are crowded with piles of debris. Some days we just want to walk away from all of this because recovering seems insurmountable. But it also feels difficult to abandon a place that is hurting so much.

Moving forward, we'll slowly continue to wade through the requirements, delays, and decision-making of rebuilding our home. Our roof deposit will be reimbursed by insurance so that we can apply your donations to our deductible and all the unexpected expenses that will continue to arise. We'll also be focusing on rebuilding our emotional and mental state, and nurturing our faith. We hope to resume teaching music lessons soon (a good chunk of our monthly income). We're also excited about our music being published with World Library Publications ( www.wlp.jspaluch.com) this year and praying for opportunities for Out of Darkness ( www.outofdarknessmusic.com) events and retreat/speaking events for Lori and Ava's new book Side by Side Journal ( www.sidebysidejournal.com & www.avemariapress.com) which released right after the hurricane. Working and ministering in these areas helps us continue to provide for our family and provides some "normal", bringing us little moments of joy right now. This is one more area we'd appreciate prayers for and also appreciate any leads you might have on a church, diocese, or organization who might benefit from our ministries.

If you're still with us...sorry this was a long one, lol...we are, again, just so incredibly grateful for you and for the peace of mind and blessing your generosity has brought to our family!

God bless you, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!

Adam, Lori, Ava, Logan, and Leila

Hi all! The Ubowski’s are in Wi-Fi chaos at the moment. Lori texted me this yesterday. The money you so generously donated was used yesterday to pay the deposit on work for their home. You will never know how much your generosity has meant to them! Love and peace, and many thanks - Sarah Hart

From Lori:

4 weeks after Hurricane Michael hit, we’ve now been back living in Panama City for 3 days. School started on Monday and we’re slowly moving into a rental house about 10 minutes from our school and home. This is a tremendous blessing as so many are displaced over an hour away from their jobs, homes and schools. Upon returning to our home for the first time 3 weeks ago to survey the damage and get what belongings we could salvage, there was much despair and many tears. Realization set in that we would not be able to return to our home for months. Since then we’ve been navigating insurance deductibles, settlements, allowances, contractors, roof replacement, mold treatment, demolition...and the list goes on. An overwhelming task for a couple of musicians with no experience at all in this area. The required decision making and inability to research because of little to no cell data or WiFi has caused much stress. Our church continues to pick up the pieces...hoping to rent a tent so we can at least have Mass protected from the elements. The devastation is still everywhere around us and it’s difficult to remain positive. BUT our Lord is faithful and all who have reached out and supported us are what brings smiles to our faces and hope to our hearts. Your contributions have brought peace to a very uncertain and stressful situation and for that we are forever grateful! We are also grateful for your prayers...they have made all the difference! We will update more in the days to come. Thank you again!

Hi friends....I spent a while on the phone with Lori this morning. Things are rough. Please continue to pray for this family, and their community, and all of those so hard hit by this storm. I have upped the goal because of new information about the amount of damage and need. Please do what you can...thank you, so very much, for being there for the Ubowski's!
