Help for Mike Callis

Donation protected
Seventy year old Mike Callis was the victim of a hit-and-run accident on Saturday, July 21st. Less than a block from home, he was struck in the crosswalk at the intersection of Macon and Waring. The driver fled the scene, and has yet to be identified. If you have any information about the accident, please contact the Memphis Police Department.

The accident left him with two fractured hips, a fractured pelvis, fractured vertabrae and internal bleeding. He is being treated at Regional One Hospital in Memphis, and has undergone two surgeries so far. It will be at least six weeks until he can put any weight on his hips or pelvis. He is expected to be discharged in a wheelchair, but a ramp will need to be installed to access his home.

Mike is a longtime employee of Stepherson's Grocery Store in the Berclair neighborhood. He is the father of three, and has four grandchildren. He lives with his daughter Anna, her husband Jorge and their children. In addition to contributing financially to the household, he also helps with childcare. This accident will be a huge financial burden for them.

Mike, or "Pops" as his family and friends call him, is a kind and generous man. One of my first encounters with him was at the ice cream truck on our street, buying treats for his grandchildren. When he overheard me telling my children I couldn't afford what they wanted, he bought it for them, without hesitation. Pops was a stranger to us back then. Now, I consider him family.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer, through a donation or simply by sharing his story.
