Happy New Year and special thanks to all who have helped me through the most difficult year of my life.    Your donations not only helped pay my out-of-pocket medical expenses & transportation to the many dr. appointments,  the money also helped me replace a rusted old refrigerator, fix my leaking roof and just recently, replace doors that rotted and were falling off their hinges, literally. You helped make this home a safer place for me and Marley.

More than that, you gave me your prayers, hope, the motivation to fight and a stronger will to live.  How does one say thank you for that?  I just don’t have the words to express my love and appreciation for every one of you.

Chemo is a difficult way of life but I would rather live with cancer than die from it.  Good news is,  underneath this beautiful red wig lies a patchy inch of growth resembling a Brillo pad, or Keith Richards on a 'bad' hair day, I have gained weight, I have resumed making mosaic (new photos attached) and feeling very grateful to be  making art.  Also glad I am getting treatment and tolerating it – so far.  Not so good news is that it has taken its toll on my body – soon I’ll know if I can continue.

In the meantime, I wanted to let you know how you each contributed to my being here for 2017.  Be happy, be healthy, be grateful and be kind.

So Much Love,

Laurel

Le Chaim! To Life!

Beautiful photo of Laurel celebrating, with family & friends, her 1 yr survival since being diagnosed October 16 & 2016, her new tattoo,

The incredible news from Laurel’s most recent CT Scan: the mass in her lung went down by 30% !! There are still small lesions on her liver, right kidney, ribs and spine, but they appear stable and have not grown so it’s more good news. The ones in her lower spine may need radiation; she’ll know more at the end of this month. Her doctors and staff are amazed by her. I think it’s fair to say that we all are!

Laurel’s new tat “Be Brave 1333” - what is the significance? July 1st of this year Laurel’s symptoms were so severe she was admitted to the hospital – Room 1333. In Laurel’s own words:

“Doctors were ordering treatments and then conferring and changing them again and again. Five doctors were involved. Five chaplains came the first week from various denominations. I was told to get my affairs in order and asked if I wanted to be resuscitated. I do not remember them telling me that my kidneys were failing, but I think I heard I had pneumonia ‘cause I remember them putting down that wretched tube down my nose. They expected me to die that first week. I was in the hospital for two weeks. Friends were staying with me around the clock. I was in a private room, for isolation. My body was shutting down. No one told me how bad it was. Friends and doctors stayed by my side. Most didn't expect me to make it through the night, or the next night, or the next. The room was 1333. Then, I survived. Still here.”

I hope every one of her friends, strangers, donors know how much you have empowered Laurel to fight to live. She once told me she was going to fight hard because she did not want to disappoint any of you. She hasn’t.

Thank you all,
Michele, Marley and her family & friends

OMG! I just read these beautiful messages! I've been sick a lot and not often going to Facebook. Lots of nausea and fatigue, so I sleep as much as I can to get away from it. I try to keep hope alive, although some of my medical team tell me to be 'more realistic' that it is stage IV anger. So I find myself in the crosshairs and confused. Next week I go to Stanford Medical for a 2nd opinion. Still hoping. Had radiation on my leg a few days ago and am wheelchair/walker bound for 6 weeks. But hopefully up and walking again after that. My love and gratitude to everyone! God bless you all!

Laurel, Yay! Now doing Art Therapy! Powerful. Love the hansa mosaic--almost defying gravity, haha! Saw a Rudy Maxa travelogue last week on TV; he traveled to Rajasthan: I kept thinking, was Laurel there? Did Laurel see that when she was there? Did she stay there? Does she know the Shah?? :) You are an extraordinary woman to have shared those experiences with us students over the years. And pure Love. Thank you for your love & connection. You inspire me!

Laurel, You've been coming to mind a lot lately...praying for you. I'm thrilled to see a post from you and that you're making mosaics again. Love the Keith Richards bad hair day comment, soon you'll be able to put a little styling wax in it and embrace a new look. I have the mirror I made in your class in my studio and see it everyday, it makes me smile! You are such a gift to mosaic and an inspiration to us all. Love and blessings to you and Marley!

And even in the midst of it all, there you are creating again and teaching me, teaching me, teaching me. That is one kick*** crutch for your friend! Powerful art. Thank you for having the girls share your art with us; it's a testament to your fierce spirit and creativity that flows from you. You and your family (& nurses & doctors) remain on our prayer list. I'm even asking Archangel Michael to shield & protect you while you are going through your treatment, too--I hear he's pretty fierce, too. Sending Love, hugs and more hugs!

Hi Aunt Laurel - I remember your kindness and what an inspiration you were to me, a gangly tween, Harvey and Bobbi's daughter visiting for half a year in CA! You showed me the world of art and crafting and that there are loving, giving adults in this world; a neat role model for a tween in the formative years. Thank you for being a gift in my life. I wish you healing and pain relief and joy, peace and light in your life. Loving you from AZ, Patti Spindler
