Happy New Year and special thanks to all who have helped me through the most difficult year of my life.    Your donations not only helped pay my out-of-pocket medical expenses & transportation to the many dr. appointments,  the money also helped me replace a rusted old refrigerator, fix my leaking roof and just recently, replace doors that rotted and were falling off their hinges, literally. You helped make this home a safer place for me and Marley.

More than that, you gave me your prayers, hope, the motivation to fight and a stronger will to live.  How does one say thank you for that?  I just don’t have the words to express my love and appreciation for every one of you.

Chemo is a difficult way of life but I would rather live with cancer than die from it.  Good news is,  underneath this beautiful red wig lies a patchy inch of growth resembling a Brillo pad, or Keith Richards on a 'bad' hair day, I have gained weight, I have resumed making mosaic (new photos attached) and feeling very grateful to be  making art.  Also glad I am getting treatment and tolerating it – so far.  Not so good news is that it has taken its toll on my body – soon I’ll know if I can continue.

In the meantime, I wanted to let you know how you each contributed to my being here for 2017.  Be happy, be healthy, be grateful and be kind.

So Much Love,

Laurel

Dear friends of Laurel,

Today is Laurel's 72 birthday! To say that is miraculous would be an understatement. During this time when people are choosing to leave this world, here is our Laurel fighting to stay just one more day.

The most recent news has been so good and so bad at the same time. In her words, (edited by me to leave out the most horrific of side effects). Good news: "My hip healed from when I fell and it shattered, but I still use a cane. I have been doing well in the study, there has been significant decrease in the tumors my right lung. "

The not-so-good news: "Severe side effects has caused me to go deaf in one ear. I was getting cortisone injections in that ear drum, but they stopped, saying it’s not working, it’s most likely permanent. It is ruptured . It’s has changed my life. Throws my balance off and I can't tell where sound is coming from." Also, "other side effects became more intense and I got really sick. Couldn’t eat solid food for almost three weeks. I got home a week ago Monday and by Wednesday I was much worse so Thursday they took me off the clinical trial. But they may start me again on a lower dose. "

Yesterday she wrote, "I am going to be 72 tomorrow, I can’t believe I’m still alive! It sure has been a rough road. But tell everyone I'm not dead yet!!"

Friends, three weeks at Stanford costs about $5,000 in expenses. She does not want to ask for donations but we have not reached our goal, so I will continue this. Even the smallest amount would add up and make this birthday one of less worry for her.

Thank you from my heart and surely from hers, Marley's and her sons. Happy Birthday Laurel! Michele

Hi everyone,

Since the last update in January so much has happened in Laurel’s life. As if Laurel’s quest to beat this terrible disease called cancer wasn’t enough to deal with, she fell and broke her hip, already ravaged by bone cancer. While doing surgery to repair the damage her vitals took a nose dive and they had to revive her twice. She spent several days in ICU on a respirator and when her vitals became a little more stable she went to a surgical room for 2 weeks, then rehab. Overcoming those hurdles was nothing less than miraculous! But, she is still there and misses Marley, her home and her darling dog Dharma (it’s wonderful that they allow visits!)
Also, at this same time, she developed a terrible cough which they discovered is due to new lung tumors. She is devastated that, while chemo kept them at bay, chemo is no longer an option. There is only one more option for her – a new trial at Stanford and not a minute too soon. Four patients already enrolled in the trial are doing well and, since chemo is no longer an option, this is her last chance. The doctors think she should try.
And, once again, she and Marley are faced with the expenses of staying in Stanford during the treatment. She needs and wants this time with Marley since she will be there for awhile which means a house & pet sitter. The cost to stay nearby Stanford is quite high, as you can imagine in California. While her amazing friends – old and new – have been so generous in their donations, love and support in the last
1 ½ yrs funds for housing, transportation, co-pays, uncovered meds, food, etc. are still so needed.
Thank you in advance for any thing you can contribute and, if all you have to give is prayer and encouragement, she needs that too!
Thank you from me, Laurel, Marley and her family and friends.

OMG! I just read these beautiful messages! I've been sick a lot and not often going to Facebook. Lots of nausea and fatigue, so I sleep as much as I can to get away from it. I try to keep hope alive, although some of my medical team tell me to be 'more realistic' that it is stage IV anger. So I find myself in the crosshairs and confused. Next week I go to Stanford Medical for a 2nd opinion. Still hoping. Had radiation on my leg a few days ago and am wheelchair/walker bound for 6 weeks. But hopefully up and walking again after that. My love and gratitude to everyone! God bless you all!

Laurel, I don't know you in person nor have we ever spoken, but I've been following your story for a couple of years now. The first time I read about you and your ability to find beauty and squeeze so much life out of every moment that you are given it truly inspired me. I can't look at your pictures on here without smiling, you have such light and fire in your eyes , it's a beautiful thing! I just wanted to say Happy, Happy Birthday! May today be full of loved ones and precious memories. You are in my prayers and I've shared your story with my family and now they pray for you too! Laurel, Yay! Now doing Art Therapy! Powerful. Love the hansa mosaic--almost defying gravity, haha! Saw a Rudy Maxa travelogue last week on TV; he traveled to Rajasthan: I kept thinking, was Laurel there? Did Laurel see that when she was there? Did she stay there? Does she know the Shah?? :) You are an extraordinary woman to have shared those experiences with us students over the years. And pure Love. Thank you for your love & connection. You inspire me!

Laurel, You've been coming to mind a lot lately...praying for you. I'm thrilled to see a post from you and that you're making mosaics again. Love the Keith Richards bad hair day comment, soon you'll be able to put a little styling wax in it and embrace a new look. I have the mirror I made in your class in my studio and see it everyday, it makes me smile! You are such a gift to mosaic and an inspiration to us all. Love and blessings to you and Marley!

And even in the midst of it all, there you are creating again and teaching me, teaching me, teaching me. That is one kick*** crutch for your friend! Powerful art. Thank you for having the girls share your art with us; it's a testament to your fierce spirit and creativity that flows from you. You and your family (& nurses & doctors) remain on our prayer list. I'm even asking Archangel Michael to shield & protect you while you are going through your treatment, too--I hear he's pretty fierce, too. Sending Love, hugs and more hugs!
