Happy New Year and special thanks to all who have helped me through the most difficult year of my life.    Your donations not only helped pay my out-of-pocket medical expenses & transportation to the many dr. appointments,  the money also helped me replace a rusted old refrigerator, fix my leaking roof and just recently, replace doors that rotted and were falling off their hinges, literally. You helped make this home a safer place for me and Marley.

More than that, you gave me your prayers, hope, the motivation to fight and a stronger will to live.  How does one say thank you for that?  I just don’t have the words to express my love and appreciation for every one of you.

I wanted to let you know how you each contributed to my being here for 2017.  Be happy, be healthy, be grateful and be kind.

So Much Love,

Laurel

Dear Friends, the Mosaic Community and all donors,

As you know by now, Laurel passed away July 22, 2018 following almost two years of the most incredible example of courage, tenacity and the will to live.

I have changed the name of this fund to the Help Laurel Skye Trust. Laurel set up a trust for her daughter Marley when she first discovered she had cancer. Her main concern was always that her daughter have a safe home in the incredible mosaic palace they built together.

Laurel's letter to all of you this past January (below) is a reminder of how incredibly grateful she was for everyone that helped her and Marley.

From Laurel's daughter Marley:

To all of my mom's friends, peers, and admirers,

I’ve been keeping up with all the stories/memories all of you have shared on social media and how much you miss my mom and admire her contributions to mosaic and the world at large. She and I had pretty much stopped working these last few years when the focus had shifted to managing her cancer. The support of other artists and friends from around the world was, and still is, a God-send. Currently, I’m regrouping and am waiting to see what my own next steps are in life.

The love and support from everyone has made a hard time easier. Thank you for all your donations, it has meant so much!

Today we lost our dear friend on earth, Laurel Skye. At the same time, the heavens gained a true warrior spirit. Not only was Laurel a dear friend, she was a walking icon. Never boring, always ready to help, to teach. She never wasted a minute and her creativity was always on fire. When she was ordering mosaic supplies, it was not unusual for her to call me 5 times in one day to add more things – her mind was always creating!! I so admired that she was so true to herself in every way. Most of all she was a good teacher, a loyal friend and a great mom, always determined to share with Marley every experience and adventure she had.

Zo Devine, her longtime loyal friend and now Marley’s guardian shared this, “Laurel’s soul is like a super nova, a star that suddenly increases greatly in brightness because of a cataclysmic explosion that ejects most of its mass. Today Laurel ejected her earthly mass as well and will take her place among the other Super Novas. A great loss for us all who are still on the planet but look up and say kind words when you see her - she will be among the brightest stars.”

Another longtime friend, Ursi , told me recently that “Laurel’s life was motivated by her intense creativity and fiercely independent nature. She was a collector of artifacts, oddities, materials, experiences and stories. Her stories never ended, most of them hilarious. She loved to hostess, serving treats and tea to the myriad of people her stopped by her house.”

Laurel was constantly amazed by the generosity of others – all of the friends, students, colleagues and even strangers who helped her and Marley through this fund. I hope I can keep this going for Marley as long as I can. There will be a tribute page you can leaves messages on soon, if you wish. It was Laurel’s desire to be cremated and, in lieu of flowers, make donations to this fund. In the near future I will share the family’s plan for a future memorial.

On behalf of all the family and friends who loved Laurel, I know first hand how critical your donations were to helping her live longer and provide so much in so many ways to her and Marley.

Warmest regards,
Michele

OMG! I just read these beautiful messages! I've been sick a lot and not often going to Facebook. Lots of nausea and fatigue, so I sleep as much as I can to get away from it. I try to keep hope alive, although some of my medical team tell me to be 'more realistic' that it is stage IV anger. So I find myself in the crosshairs and confused. Next week I go to Stanford Medical for a 2nd opinion. Still hoping. Had radiation on my leg a few days ago and am wheelchair/walker bound for 6 weeks. But hopefully up and walking again after that. My love and gratitude to everyone! God bless you all!

I live in Idaho and never got to meet Laurel in person but did email with her. When I couldn’t find epoxy clay that she used for some of her art here I ordered it from her. She sent it before I even got it paid for! I could tell she was one of those artists who, for her, art was not about the money, but about teaching and helping people. I told her in my thank you email she seemed like someone that would give the shirt off her back. She did say however she wouldn’t share her Uggs. LOL! So wish I could have met her in person and seen the mosaic masterpiece of a home shared by her and Marley. I know you’re sharing your talents and love in the world you’ve gone to. But you are deeply missed in this one. RIP Beautiful Laurel!

Laurel, Yay! Now doing Art Therapy! Powerful. Love the hansa mosaic--almost defying gravity, haha! Saw a Rudy Maxa travelogue last week on TV; he traveled to Rajasthan: I kept thinking, was Laurel there? Did Laurel see that when she was there? Did she stay there? Does she know the Shah?? :) You are an extraordinary woman to have shared those experiences with us students over the years. And pure Love. Thank you for your love & connection. You inspire me!

Laurel, You've been coming to mind a lot lately...praying for you. I'm thrilled to see a post from you and that you're making mosaics again. Love the Keith Richards bad hair day comment, soon you'll be able to put a little styling wax in it and embrace a new look. I have the mirror I made in your class in my studio and see it everyday, it makes me smile! You are such a gift to mosaic and an inspiration to us all. Love and blessings to you and Marley!
