I’m Paula from Hamburg in Germany but at the moment I live in the Netherlands. I created this page for Justina, my host mother in Peru.
She is 68 years old and a mother of 8 children. I met her during my voluntary service in Peru which I carried out in her city Abancay for 1 year. One day some friends took me to her family’s house for dinner and as time went by we developed a deep friendship. Eventually, Justina opened up the doors of her home to me and I ended up living with her and her family for a while. I came to know her as a very generous and incredibly strong woman, who worked hard all of her live to feed her family and still fights enthusiastically for justice and development in her neighborhood, although she never received any school education. She is a cheerfull person who loves to sing and dance to Huayno, the andenian music (preferably in Quechua) and enjoys walking out there in the mountains (although she rarely finds the time to do so). I have learned a lot from her and although I later had to return to Europe we keep staying in touch.
Now, Justina is suffering from a badly performed operation that she had to undergo a couple of years ago due to hernia. In her abdomen, where she had the operation there is growing some kind of external tumor or wild flesh. Additionally, she increasingly has problems with the reactivity of her arms due to an untreated disc prolapse and she is suffering from strong pain. Especially of her back and her bones, so that she can’t stay in one position for long, be it standing, sitting or laying down. To make a living Justina sold self-prepared food on the streets of Abancay carrying it everywhere in her wheelbarrow. Work that requieres a lot of phycial strenth and did not give her much of an income. Because of her health issues she now had to stop working at all and the financial situation is becoming even more comlicated. Her family urgently wants to take her to a hospital to have her health issues diagnosed and begin a possible treatment but she and her familiy have limited financial ressourses and can’t affort it.
In Peru the Government provides health services to those who don’t have insurance in exchange for a refund fee that differs in its amount. Thus, through governmental subsidies health services are made available to the population living in poverty. The provision of services for the open public works by a network of regional state institutions and the Ministry of Health. This pubic health system though is lacking human ressources and infrastructure and can’t meet the populations needs, especially outside of the capital Lima. The waiting times are long and the medical attention is deficient and hardly trustworthy. In order to get trustworthy and effective medical treatment Justina needs to be taken to a private clinic.
I love her very much and it hurts me to see her like this. This is why I created this page for her. I want to support her from Germany and find the possibility to make her more comfortable, so that her family, including me, can keep on spending cheerfull time with her.

La conocí cuando estaba realizando un servicio voluntario durante un año en su ciudad en Perú. Un dia unos amigos me llevaron a su casa para cenar con su familia y se generó una gran amistad. Justina me abrió las puertas de su casa y corazón hasta dejandome vivir con ellos un tiempo y compartir vidas. La he conocido como una mujer muy generosa y increíblemente fuerte, trabajando dura toda su vida para alimentar a su familia y luchando con mucho entusiasmo para la justicia y el desarollo en su barrio aunque nunca ha tenido educación adecuada. Ella es una persona muy viva y le gusta cantar y bailar el Huayno, la musica de la sierra (preferiblemente en Quechua) y caminar por los cerros (aunque pocas veces encuentra tiempo). He aprendido mucho de ella y aunque tenia que regresar a europa estamos en contacto todavia.
Ahora Justina esta sufriendo un mal de una operación anterior de hernia. Le esta saliendo una deformidad parecido a un tumor sobresaliente en su abdomen. Además tiene un prolapso de disco no tratado que le causa un problema con la reactividad de sus brazos y dolores fuertes, en particular en la espalda y en los huesos que no le permitan quedarse mucho tiempo en la misma posición, sea parada, sentada o hechada.
Para ganarse la vida, Justina salió a vender en su carretilla por las calles de su ciudad la comida que prepara en casa. Un trabajo que require mucho esfuerzo fisico y le da poca ganancia. Por su mal estado ella ya no puede salir a vender y se complica la situación en casa. Urgentemente sus hijos la quieren llevar al hospital para hacer diagnosticar su enfermedad y comenzar un tratamiento pero a ella y a sus familiares les limita los recursos economicos.
En el Perú, el Gobierno ofrece servicios de salud a la población no asegurada a cambio del pago de una cuota de recuperación de montos variables. Se trata pues de un subsidio a la prestación de servicios de salud a la población en situación de pobreza. La prestación de servicios, tanto para el régimen subsidiado de población abierta como para la población afiliada al SIS, se realiza mediante la red de establecimientos de los Gobiernos regionales y del Ministerio de Salud ubicados en las regiones y en la capital. Este sistema público de atención a la salud cuenta con insuficientes recursos humanos y de infraestructura para atender las necesidades de la población. Especialmente fuera de la capital Lima. Los tiempos de espera son muy largos y la atención médica es deficiente y poco fiable. Para tener una atención médica fiable y efectivo Justina tiene que ir a una clínica privada.

Eines Tages nahmen mich ein paar meiner Freunde zu einem gemeinsamen Abendessen im Haus ihrer Familie mit und daraus entwickelte sich eine tiefe Freundschaft. Später öffnete Justina mir die Tür zu ihrem Zuhause und ich lebte für eine Weile bei ihr und ihrer Familie. Ich habe sie als eine sehr großzügige und unglaublich starke Frau erlebt, die ihr ganzes Leben lang hart arbeitete, um sich und ihre Familie ernähren zu können. Obwohl sie niemals eine Schulbildung erhalten hat, setzt sie sich leidenschaftlich für Gerechtigkeit und Entwicklung in ihrem Viertel ein. Sie ist lebhaft und liebt es zum Huayno zu singen und zu tanzen, der traditionellen, andinen Musik (und das am liebsten in Quechua) oder in den Bergen spazieren zu gehen (auch wenn sie nur sehr selten dazu kommt). Ich habe in unserer gemeinsamen Zeit viel von ihr gelernt und obwohl ich wieder zurück in Europa bin bleiben wir im Kontakt.
Derzeit ist Justina in einem schlechten gesundheitlichen Zustand. Sie leidet unter einem Geschwür oder der Entwicklung von wildem Fleisch, als Folge einer vor Jahren schlecht durchgeführten Operation im Bauch nach einem Leistenbruch. Zusätzlich hat sie nach einem unbehandelten Bandscheibenvorfall große Probleme mit der Reaktionsfähigkeit ihrer Arme und sie wird von schlimmen Schmerzen im Rücken und allen Gelenken geplagt, sodass sie nicht lange in einer Position verweilen kann - sei es stehend, sitzend oder liegend. Ihren Lebensunterhalt verdient sie durch den Verkauf von selbst zubereitetem Essen, das sie mit einer Schubkarre ins Stadtzentrum von Abancay fährt und dort in den Straßen anbietet. Dies ist eine harte körperliche Arbeit, die ihr nur wenig Lohn einbringt. Auf Grund ihres schlechten gesundheitlichen Zustandes kann sie nun nicht mehr arbeiten und die finanzielle Situation spitzt sich zu. Ihre Familie möchte sie dringend zur Untersuchung und Diagnosestellung in ein Krankenhaus bringen, damit eine eventuelle Behandlung begonnen werden kann, aber sowohl Justina als auch ihren Kindern fehlen die finanziellen Mittel.
In Peru gibt es ein öffentliches Gesundheitssystem für die Menschen, die nicht über einen Arbeitgeber versichert sind oder sich keine private Krankenversicherung leisten können. Die Behandlungskosten werden zunächst übernommen, müssen aber zurückerstattet werden. Diese staatliche Subvention soll die gesundheitliche Versorgung der in Armut lebenden Bevölkerung sicherstellen. Die Leistungen werden über ein Netzwerk aus regionalen staatlichen Institutionen und Gesundheitsministerien zur Verfügung gestellt. Allerdings fehlt es diesem öffentlichen Gesundheitssystem an Personal und Infrastruktur und es kann kaum die Bedürfnisse der Bevölkerung erfüllen, vor allem außerhalb der Hauptstadt Lima. Die Wartezeiten sind lang und die medizinische Behandlung mangelhaft und nicht vertrauenswürdig. Um eine effektive und zuverlässige medizinische Versorgung zu bekommen muss Justina in eine private Klinik gebracht werden.
Ich habe sie sehr lieb und es schmerzt mich sie in diesem Zustand zu wissen. Das ist der Grund, warum ich diese Seite für sie eingerichtet habe.
