Emily C. lost her mother and father on Sunday, September 9, 2018 when 2 sneaker waves swept them out to sea as they were collecting mussels and fishing on a rock near the ocean. Emily was with them but was not hurt. Emily is a 10 year old 6th grader at Lake Oswego Jr. High.  Her family just immigrated to the U.S. in July. She has no siblings or immediate family in the country. She is being cared for by a foster family but will need funds for her care going forward. Anything you can give will help. This GoFundMe was established by Marcie McAuliffe, Treasurer of the LOJ Parent Club in Lake Oswego, OR.  Once we are directed by Emily’s legal/care team we will release the funds to her guardians for basic living expenses, education and/or travel back to China.  Thank you.

Good news! We are now in a position to distribute your generous donations to an investment account for Emily's higher education. Here is an update from Emily's aunt, Cindy, addressing what has happened since that tragic day and the family's plan moving forward. Again, thank you so much for your generous donations and please keep Emily in your prayers.

"I am Emily's aunt. Her father was my younger brother. I came to Oswego the next day after receiving a call from the Oregon State Police of the tragic event. I had expected to get all the necessary things done and take Emily with me in about 10 days based on my knowledge of the way in China but it turned out the legal process is far more complicated and time consuming in the US/Oregon. We had no experience dealing with the situation and never expected it could happen to us. I have taken over as the foster parent of Emily from a local family, arranged for the funeral of my brother and sister-in-law, and continue to handled the legal and related matters.

Since I came to Oregon on September 11, I have received overwhelming outpouring of sympathy and support of the community. Community members organized volunteers to offer all kinds of help. They, the government officials, and the State Police officers are so wonderful people. Without their emotional and physical support and help I would not have been able to handle the situation by myself. I cannot thank them enough.

We are further moved by your fund raising and the generosity of the many contributors. We understand what these wonderful people contributed is not only money but also the spirit of love, sympathy and their best wishes for Emily to do well in life beyond overcoming her tragedy. Emily joined the school and her family joined the community only for a short period of time but the parents of the Lake Oswego Junior High and the members of the community offered her such heartfelt support and generosity. No word can express our appreciation for you and the contributors to the fund raising. Would you please pass our highest appreciation to the contributors and let them know that they have helped far beyond the money raised? As for the fund, we think the best use is for Emily's education. We hope Emily to receive good education, become a loving and productive member of the society, and to return to the society the love and favors she receives from the wonderful people of the community.

The Oregon Department of Human Services (DHS) took custody of Emily right after the incident. What I have been doing is going through the legal processes to take her custody to our extended family. The first plan was for my husband and I to adopt Emily. We have our own children. Considering my other brother and his wife do not have a child, it'd be more logical for them to adopt her eventually which is the current plan. The DHS and I have been working together very cooperatively and we expect the plan will be approved in the next few days.

I am living with Emily in Lake Oswego and will take her to Florida once the plan is approved."

Thank you to everyone who donated for Emily. We have exceeded our goal of $25,000. We are told that Emily's caregivers are still sorting out her situation and deciding how to proceed. There is a freeze on the account until we determine where to disburse the funds based on her greatest needs. When we hear back from the folks managing her case we will be happy to provide an update. Thank you for all of your heartfelt generosity for this young lady.
