Help for Danny & Rema

On Sunday, January 20th, around 930 pm, Danny and Rema were leaving their shift from the restaurant where they are both servers.  They were crossing  in a crosswalk when they were struck by a speeding SUV in the middle of the street, barely missing a third person.  They were struck full on by the vehicle, throwing Danny 15-20 feet and Rema rolled up the front of the vehicle and impacted on the windshield and sending her through the air.  At this time, it is still unclear if the driver was under the influence, on her phone or just not paying attention.   Fortunately both survived the accident but they sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.  

Rema's knee was broken in several different places  and fractured her patella requiring immediate reconstructive surgery as well as tore her MCL.  She suffered minor brain trauma and a hematoma in her brain with ongoing extreme vertigo.

Danny has multiple torn ligaments in both of his knees and the doctors are undecided if he has to have surgery on his left leg and knee.  He had severe hemorrhaging in his hip and had to have emergency surgery.  Additionally,  from impact, Danny tor his rotator cuff.  




Rema and Danny are both servers and have multiple jobs to make ends meet.  Danny serves at 2 different restaurants and Rema is a yoga instructor when she's not serving.  If you've ever worked in the Food & Beverage industry, you understand how many of us live paycheck to paycheck and every day you don't get to wait tables and make tips, your budget shrinks exponentially.  It can feel like the walls are closing in.  Due to the severity of their injuries, it is unclear if or when Danny and Rema will be able to return to work as servers and Rema will not be able to teach Yoga for a significant amount of time.  Both have to undergo very intense Physical Therapy but are doing everything they can to stay positive and keep smiles on their faces in these troubling times.  This campaign was started by Danny and Rema's coworkers at Waterbar; are a very close knit 'family' at the restaurant where we work together at and we are doing everything we can to rally behind these two to make them feel loved, supported and that they're not left to fend for themselves.  Though they are able to laugh and smile, you can feel the added pressure of them not knowing how they're going to pay rent, pay their bills and have the basic necessities taken care of.  


The road to recovery will undoubtedly be a long and painful one.  They will both have to undergo intensive physical therapy to heal their bodies and very few can understand what they will have to go through to recover mentally from such a traumatic experience.  Their bills from the hospitals and emergency surgeries are already at an oppressive level and there are still countless doctor visits that remain.  We hope to ease their pain any way possible and at least provide them with the financial peace of mind for the next few months.  At the restaurant, our servers and bartenders have designated different nights to donate a portion of the tips they make to essentially wait tables on their behalf.  We are hosting various fundraisers in their honor and our GoFundMe goal is $5,000 to split between them but that will really only cover the tip of the iceberg.  Anything you can donate, be it $5 or $100, helps in ways you can't even imagine.  100% of everything we raise will go directly to Danny and Rema and we hope that we can shatter the ceiling off the goal.   Thank you so much for helping our loved ones in their time of need.
