Help for Allyssa Robbins

THE NIGHT OF THE ACCIDENT

The purpose of this GoFundMe is to raise funds in support of the Robbins family. Their 20 year old  daughter, Allyssa, a Summit Christian Academy graduate and current ORU student,  is recuperating from a brutal car crash. Miraculously, Allyssa is making a full recovery, and we’re so thankful for all that God has already done in her healing process.

On January 2, 2019, Allyssa, Maia, and Andy were helping with last minute wedding details. Their best friends were getting married in two days, and all three friends were active members of the bridal party.

Around 8pm, they hopped in Maia’s car and set off for Oklahoma City from Broken Arrow to pick up a friend who was coming  to town for the wedding. The roads were icy, and just 10 minutes into the trip, the car slid on black ice, spinning out of control on an overpass. The initial impact broke the back car door, and sent Allyssa flying from the backseat. She flew off the overpass, landing 75 feet below.

When the car came to a halt, Maia and Andy were frantic. Allyssa wasn’t in the car, and they had no idea where she’d gone. They searched for her—checking under and around the car, until they finally spotted her body below the overpass. Maia ran to Allyssa, as Andy shouted directions to her from above. When Maia reached her, she was relieved to find that Allyssa was still alive.

ANDY, ALLYSSA AND MAIA

After arriving at the hospital, Allyssa was immediately rushed into a life-saving surgery. The surgeon was focused on stopping her internal bleeding.  He placed chest tubes in BOTH of her collapsed lungs. He removed her spleen and stitched her face and discovered lacerations to her kidneys and liver but her body was so cold they decided to pack her abdomen and let her stabilize before proceeding. Allyssa’s family doctor later told her family that Allyssa had been dead on the table that first night. Other injuries that were confirmed were a broken T1 vertebrae, several broken ribs, a shattered right wrist, a broken left collarbone, a broken index finger on her left hand and road rash abrasions on her left foot. They found out later she had also suffered a severe concussion.

Less than a day later, Allyssa was trying to breathe over the ventilator, but was still in severe pain. She had a second surgery on Friday morning which showed that her kidney and liver had already healed! No other injuries were found.

THE WEDDING PARTY FRIDAY NIGHT IN ICU

Surgery 3 was Saturday morning and a pin was placed in Allyssa’s left index finger. There was some concern with her coming out of anesthesia from both the 2nd and 3rd surgeries. Her blood pressure was uncontrolled, and she struggled to breathe. She was moved out of the Trauma ICU on Sunday to a regular hospital room. Monday, January 7th, was the 4th surgery to repair her wrist. There was significant muscle, tissue and nerve damage. The doctor repaired her wrist by placing 2 plates and pins and then she was cast above the elbow. The following Saturday, January 12th, Allyssa was moved to a rehab center to begin physical and occupational therapy. The doctors told her Mom that Allyssa’s spine was perfect. Her T1 showed no sign of injury! Another miracle! Her doctors have been continually impressed by her recovery.

THE ROBBINS FAMILY

We’re so happy to share that Allyssa will be headed home later this week, but her journey has just begun. She will need indefinite physical and occupational therapy, and daily assistance until her casts are removed. Her family has had its share of troubles. Allyssa’s father has COPD and her mother is his full-time caregiver. Due to her father’s illness, they had to sell their family business and they currently live on a very limited amount of SSI. Although they have insurance, it will not come close to covering everything. With the extensive medical attention that Allyssa has needed and will need for some time, it will be impossible for them to pay her medical bills.

Carrissa, Allyssa’s older sister, took off from work the 8 days immediately following the accident and lost that income. She has been a rock for her family and continues to spend every moment she can with her sister and caring for her family. Currently, Allyssa is unable to work or attend her classes at ORU, which could potentially affect her scholarship status.

All the funds raised here will go directly to the Robbins family to help with Allyssa’s medical bills and continued care for Allyssa. This fund has been set up with their permission.  Your donation is greatly appreciated!
