Help Ex-Journalist Learn To Code

Donation protected
Hello everyone. I am a journalist who was recently laid off. I've started this campaign to help raise money for myself because I'm broke af and trying to pursue a new career.

Before I get into the whole who, what, when, where or why, I'd like to thank all of the kind people around the world who have recognized my value and encouraged me to learn to code. I've heard you and now I need your support.

Much like aggressive cancer, this is a race against time. I'm financially unstable. I've been told I squandered monies I earned on instant gratification: Starbucks latte's, avocado's, organic beer, brand cigarettes, and tattoos. As a result, I have no financial resources to pay for school.

I'm asking for help to cover my expenses and get me through this unfortunate situation. I need money to not only pursue my coding education but to live a life without stress, migraines, and social media.

Your help WILL change my life for the better and once I excel at it, which I will, I can use my skills to help shape another generation of ambitious individuals.

Upon thoroughly researching coding via AltaVista , I discovered I need no prior knowledge of computer programming. There are courses designed for beginners. You don't even need to know how to turn a computer on, so I'm already ahead of the curve. (I also have experience building GeoCities and Angelfire websites.)

However, in addition to having no funding, I lack the tools. When I lost my job, I had to return my company computer. I have a Commodore 64 with a tape drive and modem my parents bought me when I was a kid, but I cannot get it to connect to Q-Link (email me if you know a fix). As a result, I'm writing this at a library. So, I not only have no access to the Internet at home, but I am unable to access some of my favorite tube channels.

That said, I am in desperate need of a laptop (preferred models ) and related tools, such as an external mouse (I've yet to master trackpads – see related fundraiser) and a monitor. Those are a FEW EXAMPLES of things I WANT and desperately NEED.

My research into coding indicates I need to know things about "Python" and "Scratch." I used a large portion of my severance to purchase a ball python, although I don't yet understand the correlation (see separate fundraiser for my er visit). Urban Dictionary describes "Scratch" as money, so I've got that covered with this fundraiser.

I spoke with a friend of Vincent James and was told it will take me approximately 10 years to grasp coding with a beginner friendly eLearning course. If true, I'll be in my mid-50s at that point and will still have many years to put my education to work, if I choose. Although, I will need to support myself and my python during that time. This harkens back to money.

I initially hesitated to create this fundraiser. I was embarrassed by my situation. I was afraid to be judged or looked down on. However, that changed when our president publicly mocked me and my colleagues for losing our jobs. His accusations of fake news broke down the wall I'd built around my ego. It made me realize I have the power (albeit not financially) to choose where I go from here.

In order for me to really do coding on a level needed to create the quality that people deserve, I first need to remove this black cloud over my head. If journalism taught me anything, it's to go against the grain. As a result, I've decided to pursue my education at Laucala Island in Fiji. Being there will give me an opportunity to not only get in touch with myself but to also recharge my aging batteries. Emotional wellness is important. (Plus I'm broke af and being there will ensure I have a lit time.)

I realize the amount I seek might seem excessive. I assure you, it's not. I recognize this fundraising website should be used for people raising money for those affected by natural disasters or those needing funds for lifesaving medical care. It also did not escape me that most of the people fighting for those funds are asking for far less money than I am. However, I also recognize my needs are no less important.

I promise I would not be asking for donations if it wasn’t ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Your money will provide me with the tools I need to pursue this new path and a sense of dominance I can use to better serve each and every person I come into contact with.

Without your help, my dreams of pursuing this career will die. Without your donations, I will be with no new education or hope for a better future for myself and my python.

Any size contribution is appreciated. Learntocode is more than just a hashtag and with your help, it could become a way of life for me. While there is no guarantee I will actually learn to code I will try and any monies left over may or may not go toward helping me research a broader frugality strategy. if you can contribute, thank you! If not, fu!

Sincerely,

David
