Help ETC Open Its Doors This Fall

About the Project:

My name is Dr. Dolores Carr. I have been an Educator for over 30 years. I am drawn to help students who struggle to find their gifts and their voices, and be able to use those gifts to transform their lives into something that would make them proud. In October 2018, with your help I will be opening a school that will help some of Central Virginia’s challenged students embark upon a journey of self-discovery, self-worth, and skills building that will lead to generational transformation.

Education Transformation Centre is an Alternative Education School that provides students with the necessary tools, skill sets, and growth opportunities to help them succeed in the classroom, and ultimately in life. Through our 6 week short term-high impact curriculum our team of licensed teachers, therapists, and other staff will work with our students with the goal of reconnecting them into their designated home school with new ways to manage behaviors and cope with the emotions that often lead to disruptive outbursts.

What sets ETC apart is that our curriculum leverages the 3rd plane of the Montessori model, which dictates that “young people need a sense of belonging, social connection, and productive opportunities to earn income to transition into adulthood”. Our activities will allow students to engage in self-discovery and exploration with a goal of identifying a skill and/or a passion that allows them to feel good about themselves, and help them transition into productive members of their community.

After 3-1/2 years of praying, planning, meeting, visiting spaces, fundraising, grant writing and waiting in hopeful expectation, we are excited to announce that we will finally open our doors this Fall (2018) in the new Yancey Community Center, Esmont.

About Me:

After receiving my Doctorate in Education and having difficulty obtaining a full-time position as a professor, I was not exactly sure why God would lead me down the strenuous path of returning to school to no avail.

After years of applications and interviews, formal and informal networking, teaching adjunct classes with the hopes that it would lead to a full time professorship, I realized that I was not having any success because God had a different plan for me; open a school that would help students like the ones I encountered so many times throughout my tenure as an educator. A school for students who were challenged by circumstances or conditions beyond their control (like myself). A school for students who did not come from an environment or a background that was conducive to success (like myself). A school for students who get lost in the shuffle of both public and private school systems and often time find themselves piling up detentions and suspensions. It is my vision along with a dedicated staff that have a passion to guide these students to find their way, the way I had so many times before as a public school teacher and in my personal life. It is our vision to help these students blossom and flourish in a way they did not know they could. It is our vision to help these students overcome obstacles and challenges and discover all the talents and gifts that lie within so they can grow to become not only successful in a school environment, but successful in life.

As a professional, I realized that there are numerous struggling students who could use an intervention, a 6 weeks course that would allow them to engage in 1 on 1 and group therapy to talk through their challenges and frustrations, to build effective social skills and strategies, and to embark upon exploratory activities that would allow them to find their “one thing” that they could thrive in and be proud of.  The research shows that when students believe in themselves, and believe in a purpose or calling, they no longer engage in behaviors or activities which lead to repeated stints in detention, suspension, or expulsion.

For over 3-1/2 years I have worked tirelessly to find space, to make connections, to obtain licensing, and to secure funding to bring this vision to life.  ETC is so close to being a reality, but we are still in need of your help.

How Can You Help?

We have made so much progress and are grateful to God for how far we have come. We have secured a space and signed a lease. Praise God! We are beginning to hire staff and bring them onboard. We are preparing the final documents to submit for a license to operate as school in the state of Virginia. We had to secure a facility as part of the packet. Mission accomplished!

To have a successful 1st year we are in need of numerous supplies. The remaining $100,000 we are seeking will go towards purchasing furniture such as tables, chairs, desks whiteboards, portable projectors, and computers. We also have a few additional staff  we will need to bring onboard, and your donations will  make this happen.

Will you consider donating to help us run the last leg of this race and have a very successful 1st year in operation for our students? Thank you in advance for anything that you may be able to provide to continue the vision.  God Bless.
