Meet Dolly. Dolly is 3 months old. She was picked up from her breeder by her lovely new family when she was 10 weeks old. She had her first vaccination with the breeder, and her new family took her to their vets for her second vaccine, where a loud heart murmur was detected. Dolly's owners thought that they had 4 weeks free insurance cover, as they were told this had been put in place when they picked her up, and that the paperwork would be sent to them. After contacting the breeder to chase up the insurance so that Dolly could be referred for a heart scan, they found out that she was not insured at all, and so her heart will not be covered even if they took out their own insurance.
Her family were offered to return her to the breeder, but she was now part of their family, and so returning her was not an option.
Dolly came to us for a heart scan, which has shown that she has a congenital heart disease called pulmonic stenosis. This means that there is a narrowing of the valve in the pulmonary artery which carries blood out of the heart and back to the lungs for oxygenating. This obstruction causes increased pressure in the heart, which eventually results in weakness/collapsing and can lead to heart failure. She will need to be on medication, and will have further investigation to check if she is a suitable candidate for surgery once she is a bit bigger. All of this will likely cost thousands of pounds.
Dolly's owners are willing to do whatever they can, and she is a bright, happy little girl at the moment. They have given us permission to share their story as a cautionary tale for anyone picking up a new puppy or kitten - make sure that you either get insurance paperwork from your breeder on collection, or find your own insurance and get everything in place! Insurance may not seem important for young animals, but it's the best way to make sure that they have the best possible cover. Once they present to the vets with a condition, if they are not already insured it will generally not be covered on any future policy.
