On the morning of June 5th, 2018 the residents in 1745 W. Touhy experienced a tragic fire  that left the building uninhabitable. The fire displaced over 40 people, including 13 children.

4 of those children attend New Field and 2 attend Eugene Field.  A number of other children attend neighborhood schools like Sullivan and Von Steuben Prep.

We are raising funds to help New Field and Eugene Field families purchase essential personal items and with the expenses of securing and furnishing new permanent housing.

All funds will be collected by Friends of the Fields , a registered 501(c)(3) non profit, on behalf of New Field and Eugene Field families displaced by the fire at 1745 W. Touhy. Upon conclusion of the GoFundMe campaign, 100% of the proceeds will be distributed to the affected families.

To help meet their immediate needs, please drop off lightly used clothing and basic hygiene items at New Field Elementary, 1707 W. Morse Avenue or Eugene Field Elementary School, 7019 N Ashland Blvd.

Hi friends,

On behalf of the entire New Field and Eugene Field community, I wanted to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for your donations. I have been informed that all of the families with children at New Field and Eugene Field have secured permanent housing, thanks in no small part to your donations. As Principal Callahan said: "it is in times like this that we must unite as a community to take care of our friends and neighbors." That's exactly what we did.

Thank you.

Joe Alter, New Field Parent

Hola amigos,

Gracias.

Friends,

We are humbled by the generosity and caring of our school family and community.

Together we’ve raised nearly $3,000 online. Hundreds more were donated through the home room coin drive.

A team of parent and community volunteers received, sorted, folded and organized mountains of donated clothing.

Thanks to Schools 2020 Loyola University Chicago and Reba Early Learning Center in Evanston, we were connected to Cradles to Crayons, a national relief children’s organization, who sent seven giant care packages of age-appropriate games, clothes, personal items and toys for our affected students.

Local businesses and community organizations including Heartland Cafe, R Pubic House, Empirical Brewing, St. Jerome's Church, Northside Community Development Corporation, the office of Alderman Joe Moore and many more stepped up in the wake of this senseless tragedy to help our neighbors in their time of need. That's what we do.

The Sun Times profiled this community-wide effort to support the victims of the fire yesterday: From the ashes of Rogers Park fire, community support. https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/rogers-park-fire-community-support-arson-donations/

As New Field Elementary Principal Conrey Callahan says, “we’re a community of need, but we’re also a community that can be counted on.”

So as we wind down our GoFundMe campaign this weekend, I humbly ask you to share it one last time with a friend or two. Let’s lift up our families as they set out to find permanent homes and rebuild their lives this summer!

Thank you all so very much. This means the world to these families.

I wanted to leave you with a message of hope from New Field's third grade music class.

Sincerely,

Joe Alter, president

Good morning,

Thank you so very much for your donations. I'd like to pass along the heartfelt gratitude of their teachers that were shared with our school council last night. In the coming days, we hope to share more from teachers, administrators, staff, parent and community volunteers from New Field and Eugene Field who have been working non-stop for the last week and a half to make our Field/New Field students feel safe and cared for as their parents find permanent housing. I can't tell you how much your donations big and small mean to them.

With gratitude,

Joe Alter, Friends of the Fields

Joe Alter, Friends of the Fields
