Help Destitute Children

Child Haven International ( www.childhaven.ca) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1985 by Bonnie and Fred Cappuccino, that assists children and women who are in need of food, education, health care, shelter, clothing, emotional and moral support. When Fred and Bonnie Cappuccino married in Dundee, Illinois, in 1953, they decided they would have two and adopt two children. A bit of a miscalculation on their part.

Over the next 27 years, the number of adoptions multiplied almost by ten.  When the tally was complete, the couple had raised 21 children from 11 countries. The politics of war and race shaped the couple’s view of the world. They pushed against injustice and embraced a pacifist ideology. Fred Cappuccino was in Selma, Alabama in January 1965, along with Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil-rights activists, for the three historic marches that helped pave the way to the passing of the Voting Rights Act later that year.

As their children grew up and moved away, the Cappuccinos shifted their focus farther from home. During the Vietnam War they helped found an organization called Families for Children that assisted children overseas. In 1985 the couple left their positions as its directors to start Child Haven, a nonsectarian, nonprofit organization that assists destitute children and women. They founded Child Haven International, a non-profit organization that now has eight children’s homes -six in India, one in Nepal and one in Bangladesh, helping more than 1,300 children and women with food, shelter, health care and education.  There are also two women's centers - one in Ghaziabad, and one in Rahon, Punjab;  and one project in Tibet providing support directly to orphan elders, single parent families, and higher education for orphaned children, among other things.

The Cappuccinos and their 21 children

Child Haven Homes provide full care through high school (Tenth Standard), and then provide vocational training so that each child can enter their local society as a self-sufficient adult. The children are taught that all human beings have equal status, regardless of caste, race, religion, or gender. Child Haven is also committed to improving the condition of women through direct employment, education, medical aid, legal aid, and training opportunities.

I will be running a half-marathon on November 4, 2018 to raise funds for Child Haven. The money raised will be used to support Education, Health and Nutrition, Clothing, Tailoring and Sports Equipment for the kids, Renovation and Construction of the homes.
