David Dunstan is a farmer from the NSW town of Bungowannah.

At 3:30am on Thursday 14th September, a man armed with a knife and piece of wood knocked on his back door.

David grabbed his unloaded 22 rifle to confront him - aware that the man had earlier confronted one if his neighbours who scared him off with a hockey stick. Dave managed to convince the man to sit in his car and drive him to the police station, while his wife called the police.

The police met David halfway down his driveway and placed his unwelcome guest under arrest.

The problem is, the police paid David another visit later in the morning to take his guns off him!

We've been working with David to try and see what can be done.  So we started this campaign which has enabled us to get him a lawyer who specialises in NSW firearms legislation to get his guns back.

We'd like to go further - we reckon he should be compensated for the loss of his firearms, not for his benefit, but to make a stand against this type of treatment by NSW Police.

So please help our campaign to help David get his guns back  - and score a symbolic win for all shooters.

Want updates?  We reckon David should be compensated for the loss of his firearms, not for his benefit, but to make a stand against this type of treatment by NSW Police.   Once this is over, we start a campaign to make this right for David, and have the law in NSW changed.  To get updates, sign up to our email list by clicking here (you can opt out at anytime)

DONE AND DUNSTED: David Dunstan has been advised that his licence will be returned to him. All he has to do is collect it from the Albury Police Station.

Thank you to EVERYONE who donate to this important cause.

We'll be turning our minds to lobbying the NSW government on changes which need to be made to the NSW Firearms Act to make sure this never happens again.

Thank you to the lawyer we hired for this job, Stephen Mainstone, for his help in liaising with NSW Police and the help he provided with working through our legal options and representations.

Once again thank you for your support.

You helped a decent, innocent man get his dignity back ... and yes, we've got our work cut out for us to try and make life easier for other shooters in the same situation.

DUNSTAN UPDATE: the special condition on Andrea’s license has been lifted. More news is likely to come through in the next day or so

Hi everyone,

It's a month later and Dave still doesn't have his guns back.

At the moment we have enough to cover his legal fees unless we need to to go the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal, which assumes his licence is cancelled. Unfortunately the law in NSW means the police have no timeframe in which they need to make their decision,

We're now looking at other avenues available to us: to have an innocent shooter caught up in the archaic laws in NSW is obviously not good enough

We didn't want David to be a pawn in the NSW byelections which were held this weekend but nor did we want his dilemma to go unnoticed, so with the help of the Shooters Union of Aust, we put out ads and media releases making sure voters took the issue of home protection into account when casting their votes.

The seats in questions will be retained, but this is an important issue which we understand the government might comment on when the byelections are over.

In the meantime, Dave hasn't gotten his guns back. That's the problem here and we're now looking at more political options.

Hey everyone,

Thanks to Troy Y, we've just reached our $20k target! Thank you everyone!

Unfortunately NSW Police are playing games: they have now added a condition to the shooters licence held by David's wife, Andrea, that she cannot store firearms under the same roof as David!

Our lawyer is preparing the paperwork for an 'internal review' of that decision. We are also working to starting a new campaign early next week to take advantage of the upcoming byelections in NSW in a little over a weeks time.

For this, we're teaming up with the Shooters Union who have some great skills in this area.

While it was not our original intention to get involved in the byelections, the behaviour of the NSW Police are making this a necessity.

Regards

Neil
