Coach Corey Burge was diagnosed in January 2019 with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 28. This was following a lengthy hospital stay and a battery of tests to uncover his illness. His family and friends have started this campaign to help financially with the enormous expense of fighting this disease.
Corey’s passion is coaching young people in the sport of volleyball. He is the current men’s coach at Centerville High School in Dayton, Ohio, as well as one of the top coaches in Air City Volleyball Club. He works very hard year-round to impart more than just skills of the game. There are life lessons--development of mental strength as well as physical, understanding that winning and losing are not the end all but stepping stones to greater things, as well as the importance of camaraderie, friendship, and respect amongst teammates and competitors. Recognizing and accepting these lessons is the core focus for Corey in developing his players and their character. This is what makes Corey such a fantastic coach, mentor, and friend. He emphasizes integrity and making good decisions.
Corey knows there are comparable lessons between his current battle with cancer and the everyday challenges of teaching and coaching young people. In his own personal challenge, Corey is facing the adversity with strength and determination. His doctors have helped him establish a strong game plan that is key to winning this battle. The journey he faces in upcoming months will build the lessons of motivation and strength that he will develop with many more kids to come.
Over the next few months, Corey’s focus will be chemotherapy and a lot of rest. He will have limited time to devote to his volleyball players and occupation. Finances will be very difficult. If you’ve ever met Corey, you know he is very shy about asking for help and never wants to be the center of attention. He shines the spotlight on things he feels are more important—family, friends, and his players. On his behalf, we are asking you to help Corey so he can recover and continue to share himself with others. Any assistance with the enormous medical bills and day-to-day living expenses is greatly appreciated while Corey focuses his time and energy on this battle.
