The Canadian Border Services Agency plans to deport Gemma and her husband Rico to the Philippines by the end of January 2019, leaving the future of their Canadian-born children Rica Mae, 12, and Eli , 8, uncertain. While Gemma and Rico do not want to be separated from their children, they also do not wish for Rica Mae and Eli to leave their home that they have built in Canada.
Gemma was a victim of a fraudulent agency who promised her Permanent Residency after working for a particular time period. She later found out that she was given fake immigration documents. Gemma met Rico while they both worked as custodians in OCAD, cleaning classrooms and studios overnight. Their commitment to support and love each other as migrant workers brought them two beautiful and intelligent children, Rica Mae and Eli.
Rica Mae and Eli go to school in Mississauga, have made friends in their neighbourhood, Church and in the community. Deporting their parents would mean that they would also have to leave their home, as their parents do not wish for them to be left under the care of others or worse, the child welfare system.
