MEET BABY PARSNIP MALONE
Parsnip is only a baby yet she has suffered so much already. She came to us from the very kind people at King's County Animal Shelter, who knew they could not properly care for her, and wanted her to have the best life she could.
Parsnip Malone is suffering from severe injuries to both of her back legs. BOTH of her tibia are shattered and bone was sticking through the skin on her left leg, which had introduced bacteria and infection.
Dr Kanfer and I discussed our options (none of them great). Pinning was out of the question considering the location and the damage, and we didn't want to just jump right over to double amputations. So, because she is so young and her healing potential so good, we decided to try snipping and repositioning one of the bones in that left leg, then splinting both of them, and keeping her in a cage (which we normally do not advocate) with very limited mobility. She was started on two forms of pain medication and two antibiotics, and we are doing periodic reassessment, as well as radiographs to help assess the bone position and healing progress.
Because she will spend at least a month with two splinted back legs we will also be assessing her attitude and quality of life on a day-to-day
basis.
We are pleased to say that in less than two weeks, though there have been ups and downs, we are already seeing some progress. The antibiotics are working, the infection level is improving, and her temperature is now consistently within normal range. She is much more comfortable, over the last two days, than she has been.
Parsnip has been hospitalized since the day she came in because she has been in such a fragile state, but we anticipate her going to her medical foster home this weekend.
Below is a list of her charges from June 30th to July 6th. We do not have an estimate on further charges because we do not know exactly what she is going to need on a daily basis. We anticipate the bill will be at least double what is shown here, AND we already had an outstanding balance of nearly $3000.

Little Parsnip Malone is affectionate - she loves cheek rubs and kisses and snuggle time and even gives kisses back! All she wants is to be a baby bunny--to be curious and playful and pain free. With your help we will do everything we can to make that happen.
