Help Arthur Bernstein Fight ALS

Donation protected
Hello Everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to read my Fathers ALS journey.

In 2013, my Dad  Arthur Bernstein, received the life altering diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – a disorder that robs its victims of the ability to walk, talk and ultimately breathe. ALS has no cure and no effective treatment and the disease is terminal. For my Dad, the first sign of weakness began in his left ankle. The disease has now spread throughout his entire body, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. He can no longer breathe on his own and is bound to a bed and wheelchair 24 hours a day.

Each day has its share of struggles and fears. About five weeks ago, I received a phone call that my dad was in the ICU after he aspirated on a sip of water and stopped breathing. He was later intubated and eventually a tracheostomy was performed.

In the five years since his diagnosis, my family and I have made the necessary changes to make sure our Dad is as comfortable as possible. However, the days ahead will be extremely difficult as well as expensive and we can no longer do it alone - We now need a trained professional that is well versed in tracheotomy care in the house 24 hours a day. The cost of 24 hour care is truly staggering and outside of the purview of insurance. This will cost us an extra $250,000.00 a year. The goal of $500,000 will give us approximately two years of care.

As hard as it is to ask for help, it has come to the point where we have no other choice. We refuse to allow money to be the reason my Dad cannot stay alive. He has expressed time and time again that he wants to keep fighting this insidious disease. My Dad refuses to give up on us. And we refuse to give up on him. We are asking for any help that you can offer us to give my Dad the best chance possible to stay alive until an effective treatment or cure for ALS is found. No donation is too small.

If everyone could please share this Go Fund Me page and say a prayer for my Dad, even if you cannot make a donation, it would mean the world to my family. On behalf of myself and the whole Bernstein family I would like to thank our community for taking the time to hear our story, God bless.

With Love,
The Bernstein Family.
