Help Alejandra Attend Stanford

Donation protected
Hello!

My name is Alejandra Campillo, and I am a senior from Waubonsie Valley High School, located in the Chicago suburbs. I was recently accepted into my dream school, Stanford, where I hope to be majoring in economics with a potential minor in political science. I originally applied to Stanford REA and was deferred. Now that I have been accepted, being able to afford the privilege to attend is one of my biggest concerns.

My family's current financial situation is quite unique. The year of 2017, we lived in Mexico due to my father's expat assignment, where costs such as our rent and school tuition were covered by the company he was employed by. According to financial aid services such as the CSS Profile and FAFSA, which recorded financial information from that year, our EFC (estimated family contribution) is incredibly inflated, as my father's income itself was incredibly hyperinflated due to those external costs being calculated in our income.

July of 2018, my father became unemployed. Since then, my five-member family has been financially surviving through my mother's job as a customer care representative and our personal savings— money originally intended to pay for my college education.

We are currently stuck in a quite difficult situation. I have been left ineligible for financial aid from any of my universities due to our inflated EFC, all while already in financial hardship— leaving us completely unable to afford university costs, even what we previously thought we could when my father was employed.

Furthermore, I have not yet received my financial aid package for Stanford, as the university is requesting tax documents we do not have ready yet, and most likely resulting in me having to commit without an estimate of financial aid. Fortunately, I will be deferring a year of my admission to attend the Congress-Bundestag Vocational Youth Exchange, a government-sponsored, year-long program where I will spend a year learning German and hopefully doing internships in government-related or non-profit organizations.

I am currently in the process of appealing for financial aid to receive a more comprehensive package; however, relying on that won't be enough, as we will also be covering the personal expenses for my exchange program. Since I cannot legally work in Germany, I am currently taking on as many extra possible hours at my current job, Chick-Fil-A.

A little bit about me is that I'm super passionate about political activism, leadership, and student engagement. Now that I have been admitted at Stanford, one of my biggest goals is sharing tips and experiences to smoothen other students' experiences through the college application process, especially with financial aid. Furthermore, I'm excited to join the Latino community at Stanford and become involved in Latinx-empowerment initiatives, making strides to close the achievement gap in low-income minority communities. I hope to document my gap year program through social media and create a strong platform where I can answer students' questions on the college application process, especially for Latinos.

At Stanford, I hope to become involved at SIEPR, the Stanford Insitute for Economic Policy Research, focusing on developmental and international economics and tackling issues such as the rampant corruption in Latin America. I also hope to become involved in the debate team, student activism on campus, and the film and theatre programs. On a smaller note, I've always wanted to be a campus tour guide!

I'm also really passionate about economic mobility, as some of my goals in the future include giving a TED Talk and producing a documentary to raise awareness about economic mobility and preserving the middle class.

If you have any questions about my fundraising process, future plans at Stanford, or gap year program, you can always reach out to me through my email, [email redacted]. The purpose of this GoFundMe is to begin covering the costs for my first year at Stanford!

Thank you so much for taking the time to check out my GoFundMe page! Any amount is appreciated. If you aren't able to donate, you can always help me out by sharing the link to people that might be interested!

I am incredibly blessed to be supported by a phenomenal group of friends, family, and teachers that have always stood by my side throughout this crazy college application process. Thank you so much for helping one Latina girl become one step closer to making her dreams come true.

Love,

Alejandra Campillo
