What’s up. I’m Adam JacksonBey and I’m President of Coffee Twitter. I’m also your resident sandwich consultant, you know, the person that you ask “Adam, is this a sandwich?” I also do other things, too! I’m on the BGA executive council, I’m on the DMV coffee board, I’ve spoken on and moderated Black Coffee, A Dialogue on Race and Coffee Culture, and dang it if I’m not a really great friend.
The last two years I’ve competed in Coffee Champs, the qualifying event for the United States Barista Competition. This year I’m competing independently, which really just means for the people.
Competitors who are sponsored by cafes and industry folks receive support in the form of funding, equipment, and travel. As an independent competitor, it’s up to me to cover all of the expenses related with competing (of which there are many!).
From entrance fees to wares to the coffee I’ll serve to getting to Nashville from D.C., the financial aspect of competing can be a major barrier. Voices like mine are few and far between at USBC, often due to lack of accessibility to the resources competition requires.
As a competitor for the people, it would mean the world to me to have your support (as, you know, the people!). Your contribution not only helps me afford a spot in this year’s competition, but ultimately allows me to show up and speak from a perspective that is underrepresented in my industry.
Thank you and cheers!
