What are we doing?

On May 20th, 2018, the congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Society: East (UUS:E), Manchester, CT, declared itself a sanctuary congregation. We pledged to protect immigrant families who face unjust deportation. Across the U.S., Unitarian Universalists are joining religious leaders, congregations, and faith-based organizations of all denominations which are part of the New Sanctuary Movement. These groups work together to resist federal policy initiatives that target and deport millions of immigrants.

What is sanctuary?

We offer a place of refuge for an immigrant and their family who are pursuing legal means to remain in the United States. This provides them and their attorneys more time to pursue their legal options. In virtually all cases in Connecticut where houses of worship have provided sanctuary, more time is all that was needed.

Why are we doing this?

Our congregation has joined a growing movement of faith and immigrant communities working together to assist those facing deportation. We are deeply troubled by immigration policies and law enforcement practices that strip residents of their due process rights, tear families apart, and weaken communities. Such policies and practices contradict Unitarian Universalism’s principles, including ‘the inherent worth and dignity of every person,’ ‘justice, equity and compassion in human relations,’ ‘respect for democratic processes,’ and ‘the goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all.’

Are we breaking the law?

Under the law, congregations are not allowed to hide people who have a deportation order. If a congregation is providing sanctuary, it must make its actions visible to the federal government. As required, UUS:E will write to ICE and to the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Connecticut to inform them when the congregation is providing sanctuary to an immigrant. ICE’s Morton Memo of October 24th, 2011 sets forth a protocol that enforcement actions will generally not take place in “sensitive areas” such as schools, hospitals and houses of worship.

How will the money be used?

Your donations will be used for basic needs, such as food and medical care.  If needed, we will assist with legal fees.  All monies will be used solely for the benefit of those in sanctuary, and not for any other purpose.
