Spotting scopes for education

Deducible
Shoreline Education for Awareness (SEA) is a non-profit Friends organization providing interpretation and environmental education about the marine environment on the Oregon south coast. SEA contributes to the conservation efforts of the Oregon Islands and Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuges.

As a partner with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, we take seriously the challenges that our oceans, streams, and marine life face from changing (some may say deteriorating) environment. Sharing with the public the data researchers are gathering and explaining what it means is one way we can solicit action and support from voters to insist that our government and private industry focus time, energy and funding on stopping pollution and on reversing decades-long damage that's been done.

Our trained volunteers interact with around 20,000 visitors each summer to coastal overlooks in Bandon and Charleston, Oregon, where we set up powerful spotting scopes so that these visitors can get a close look at our magnificent seabirds and pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) and so that they can hear the story we must tell.

In Bandon, at Coquille Point and Face Rock, the spotting scopes provide visitors the opportunity to get a close look at the magical seasonal gathering of nesting shorebirds and seabirds while our volunteer wildlife interpreters explain the birds' behaviors during this critically important summer nesting and breeding season.

In Charleston, at Simpson Reef, visitors learn about the fascinating behaviors of these pinnipeds and to view close up the awe-inspiring social interaction and behavior of seals and sea lions hauling out onto Shell Island and the surrounding reefs and rocks as they rest and moult.

Spotting scopes, and the tripods on which they are mounted, are critical tools that allow our visitors to appreciate what they are watching. This equipment experiences wear and tear from use and needs to be replaced from time to time.

Our time is now. We need your help.

Replacing spotting scopes and tripods is expensive. We hope to purchase four new scopes and 4 new tripods. Four Vortex 27-60 X85 Razor HD with fitted case plus 4 Manfrotto MK xtra carbon tripods with swivel head cost $7,960.

Your generous gifts will allow SEA volunteers to continue to offer visitors intimate experiences with Oregon's southern coast's marine life and to learn about the environment in which they live and upon which they depend.

Thank you for considering this effort.
