Help 3 Families Get Immigration Legal Assistance

Tax deductible
This holiday giving season, the Latino Racial Justice Circle is raising funds for three immigrant families seeking protection from deportation and permanent settlement in the country. The funds will cover immigration attorney fees. The Pro-Bono Resource Center (PBRC) of Maryland has identified the three families and concluded they have strong cases:

Ms. Martinez: Gang members have threatened to kill Ms. Martinez and her family because her child has refused to join the gang. They have already murdered one of her daughters and will do the same to Ms. Martinez and her other children, if they are deported. You can help prevent this from happening. PBRC’s Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project helped Ms. Martinez file her application for asylum, but she needs an attorney to represent her. Ms. Martinez and one of her children have medical issues that require treatment in the U.S.

Fernando: Fernando’s father hit him before kicking him out of the house, leaving Fernando homeless with no one to take care of him in his home country. He had no choice but to come to the United States as an unaccompanied child. Immigration has told Fernando that they want to deport him. A volunteer attorney with PBRC’s Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project recommended that he apply to stay in the U.S. using a special program for children. Fernando cannot do this alone.

Lucía: Lucía’s partner treated her like she was property and trafficked her into the U.S. For her protection, we are unable to share many details about her case. She has secured safe housing and access to social services but needs an attorney in her corner so she can remain safe. A volunteer attorney with PBRC’s Maryland Immigrant Legal Assistance Project recommended that she apply for special visas for trafficking victims and survivors of crimes.

Families who have attorneys to help them get asylum are 14 times more likely to win their cases. 90 percent of children without representation are ordered to leave the U.S.. This is an opportunity to make a big difference in people’s lives. Thank you!
