Heliconia are among the most provocative of all exotic flowering plants. Stunning diversity in both color and form make this genus the very essence of the tropics. There are around 200 species and hundreds of varieties native to the American tropics, Caribbean, and South Pacific islands. Showcased here is a discriminating collection of 102 Heliconia, including 85 species and five natural hybrids. Unfortunately, human caused habitat loss is placing these and other tropical species at risk of extinction. Conservation efforts and continued awareness are needed to preserve these fascinating plants for future generations.
