I am an award winning visual artist living in Whitehorse, Yukon. I make paper by hand from local and oriental fibres to create works of art, sculpture and installation. Papermaking is a passion that connects me physically to my materials of expression, to history and to the earth.

I have been selected to show a large installation "Singing Stones" at the International Paper Biennale "Natural Impression" in Tel Aviv, Isreal, September 2017. This work features cast paper rocks from wilderness locations of the Yukon. The funds raised from this effort will support my travel to the Biennale to install my works as well as shipping costs.

The event opens September 4, 2017. I will travel in the last week of August. So there are only a few days to raise the funds inorder to make this happen!

This is an incredible opportunity to be part of a world class international event featuring paper art from 16 countries. As a northern artist who lives remotely participation in this biennale will be an incredible opportunity to showcase my work as a Yukon artist.

I genuinely appreciate any support you can offer. Please share with others who support artists and the arts around the world.

Israeli Curator/Artist, Laura Behar, and IAPMA (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Arists) President/Paper Artist, Nicole Donnelly, (coming from Philadelphia) arrived at the train station in Be'er Sheva to pick me up . The trip from Tel Aviv brought me past vast stretches of desert, Bedouin settlements, even a glimpse of camels running by. The train was filled with young men and women soldiers, some carrying machine guns while texting their friends, returning to training after Shabbat with their families.
Soon enough I was busy installing my work for the International Paper Biennial on location at the Be'er Sheva Municipality building. The installation involved wrestling large flexible yet strong cast paper onto an assemblage of wire structures. It took a while to arrange the stones in a pleasing fashion, like you would find in nature. I had intended to have the pieces surrounded with desert sand but it was not that easy. As I learned it can be quite dangerous (for many reasons) to head out on the land and start digging it up! The paper rocks when set up look incredibly real. People of Israel were drawn to them. They looked so much like their own familiar landscape of rock, dust and sand. This I was fortunate to witness the following week on a journey to the Dead Sea and Ein Gedi near the border of Jordan.
Next update I will introduce some wonderful Israeli artists and inspiration for new work. Click image below for more pics.

Travel from Whitehorse to Tel Aviv and then to Be'er Sheva took over 24 hours. I was a little nervous to see if I would make it all the way with my big box and suitcase of paper art works and wire support structures. The box surprisingly fit perfectly in the back seat of a taxi and Air Canada didn't bat an eyelash when I presented the box as oversize luggage. The most strenuous part of the journey was the train trip south from Tel Aviv to Be'er Sheva when I had to make several trips packing the box and luggage up and down stairs hoping to make it to the right train track on time. I arrived in Tel Aviv on Shabbat which in Israel is a day of rest which means there is no train or bus service. Luckily there were some taxis and with the help of some lovely information clerks that "love paper artwork" I stayed overnight at a hostel in Tel Aviv. I had no idea how amazing the long strip of beach on the Mediteranean in Tel Aviv would be. An absolutely stunning place full of joy and life. Next update I will share the process of installation at the Biennial.

Exciting news! Thanks to your generous support I will be travelling tomorrow to Tel Aviv to install my work "Singing Stones" for The 3rd Biennial International Paper 2017 in Beer Sheva.
The exhibition opens September 4th at 5:30pm at the Municipal Gallery. The event will also take place at two other venues: Artists' House in the Negev and the Carasso Science Park.
I am still seeking support to help with additional travel costs such as accomodation, ground travel and shipping expenses. If you can share this with others who may be interested in helping this project I would be grateful.
Thank you so much to everyone who has helped me! It means so much to have such a supportive communtity of artists and art lovers come together to back my artistic vision and make it a reality. Thanks for believing in my journey. I will be updating regularly with pictures of my travel, installation and event.

Dear Friends,
As you may know I have been selected to feature my hand cast paper installation "Singing Stones" at the 3rd International Biennale in Tel Aviv opening September 4, 2017. This is the last week to contribute and make this happen!
If I do not meet my goal by Friday, August 25th I will not have sufficient funds to travel and my work will not be part of this tremendous exhibition. Please note that due to short timeline I was unable to apply for Arts Funding.
Thank you so much to friends and supporters who have contributed to help me fund travel and shipping costs to the event. It will be a tremendous opportunity to be part of this international paper biennale exhibition featuring selected artists from 16 countries.
Please donate if you can and share to friends that would like to help!
With sincere thanks, Helen
