Lucas Alexander Pacheco was born on January 2, 2019 and made his entrance into the world as Tobey Hospital’s first baby of the New Year.
Just three months after his joyful arrival, his parents Brett Pacheco and Alexia Orphanides were met with a terrifying experience.
In early April, three month old baby Lucas was having trouble breathing and was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital. He was then transported to Boston Children’s Hospital by Pediatric Critical Care Ambulance for further medical treatment and care where baby Lucas was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a condition makes it hard for the heart to deliver blood to the body, and can lead to heart failure.
Tragically, Lucas remains in critical care as his heart is not able to pump on its own. He has been sedated and on a breathing tube for the past two weeks—his family has not be able to hold or cuddle their precious baby boy during this time. Lucas is going to be placed on the heart transplant list and will await an organ donor so that he can have surgery to save his life…and he is not even four months old yet. Even with a successful transplant, it will be required that he stays in the hospital for at least nine months to a year, and it could be longer.
In order to keep the insurance benefits that are enabling Lucas to stay in the hospital, Alexia will need to return to work. The financial burden of hospital stays, transportation, mortgage, childcare for Lucas' two-year-old sister Callie, and other family expenses has increased greatly.
The nightmare of having an infant child with serious health problems takes an emotional and psychological toll on a parent. Bills and finances are the last thing that this family should have to worry about. Please find it in your heart to help baby Lucas’s heart and support his family through this time that has turned their life upside down.
