Hearing Aids

My name is Sara, but lots of people call me Hellcat, and I've had a hearing disability since childhood. I don't know when it started, but I do remember my mother always telling my teachers to put me in the front of the class, so I could hear. I, of course, hated this because it marked me out as different, that's never good for an elementary school kid.

I've always found ways to work around my hearing loss, but everyone gets irritated at the 5th time I ask them to repeat themselves, and it's isolating to not be able to hear conversations going on right nearby.  Further, it's hard to find "just a job" to get by on because I just can't hear. Server? Nope. Receptionist? Ha! Call Center? You jest! I'm trying to learn a new career in computer code--hit me up if you need a Python intern--but obviously I'll need work in the meantime. In order to improve my basic quality of life, and my chances at finding a "just to get by" job while I learn, I'm asking you to send me AID!

Other side effects include people thinking I'm snobby because I don't respond to conversation starters (that I didn't hear). I've even been reprimanded at work for not responding to customers who I didn't hear.  Also, I'm annoyingly loud when I get excited because I just can't hear how loud I am. Sorry to everyone, ever, about that. This is actually a nice quality if you need to be warned of danger from a distance IRL, not so great in a world of computers and volume controls (often set to high).

Hearing tests and hearing aids are actually NOT covered by most insurance, and I've never had insurance that covered them, so I have never actually had my hearing disability corrected, and the good ones that work are really expensive, so HEAR we are. (I can't stop myself. It's the English teacher in me. ) So, I'm raising the funds to pay for another hearing evaluation (last one was 2000) and hearing aids.

This would change my life.  I'm moving back to my alma mater August 1st, and I'd love to have a new lease on hearing things by then. The last hearing evaluation, back in 2000, pegged my hearing loss at 49% loss in the left ear, and 51% loss in my right ear. For those of you doing the math at home, that's a half-hearing loss, 16 years ago, and it has been degrading ever since; I just don't have a number to give you until I get my hearing checked again.

I turn 36 tomorrow, hearing loss at my age isn't sexy or funny, it's irritating, and frankly I'm terrified at the fact that the rest of the world must be REALLY LOUD; if I'm hearing at half-levels or less, how loud is everything, in reality?  I can't describe how thankful I would be to make this change in my life, but to start, it'd be like Nyan-cat, riding a unicorn, farting rainbows, singing an Elton John song and spreading glitter all the way. Seriously, it'd be awesome-sauce and amazing.
