Health Support for Ryan Shellhammer

Ryan is 26-years-old and is the sole provider for his family. He is in a committed relationship with his girlfriend, and they have 4 children.

In February 2018, Ryan was diagnosed with a BRCA 1 mutation. This mutation occurs specifically in his tumors. Presently, there is only one tumor located in the fourth ventricle in his brain, which is unable to be removed. Radiation will be done to shrink the tumor until it is no longer there.

Ryan began to have symptoms in early January 2018 that led him to visit the emergency room. Testing informed the doctors that masses were located in the fourth ventricle of his brain and also on the cerebellum, which led him to being transferred to Chicago for surgery to remove the tumor on the cerebellum and a plan of action. After spending a few days in the hospital to recover from brain surgery, Ryan was sent home to finish healing and pursue steps forward to recover his health. In mid-February, Ryan began to have trouble with his vision. He informed the doctor and another test was scheduled to determine the cause. Ryan saw oncologists to discuss treatment options for the tumor and vision issue. The doctor noticed that the tumor grew and is now putting pressure on a nerve, so his eyes are no longer working together and that he should refrain from driving and continue to take time off of work. She informed him that since the type of his tumors are so rare, she will have to discuss with the tumor board which plan of action would be best and get back to him. She also mentioned that if his vision does not improve within the next couple of weeks, he may need to get a special type of glasses called “prism glasses.”

A few days after the appointment, Ryan was informed that Step 1 of treatment would be to go through radiation. He will be seeing the doctor for this in early March.
