Joanne Sisson is an 11 year old 6th grade student at Velma E Baker elementary school in Southeast Edmonton. She is a vibrant, smart and loving girl.
Joanne loves to dance and perform, and has been attending Edmonton School of Ballet taking Ballet and Jazz since she was 5 years old.
As you may have seen on the news, on June 15, 2016, Joanne was biking to school in preparation to write her Grade 6 Provincial exams, and was tragically dragged under the wheels of a garbage truck 1 block away from her school.
Joanne suffered major injuries to her pelvis and legs, as well as many abrasians and internal injuries. While doctors are optimistic about her recovery and future, Joanne is still in the ICU and has undergone several surgeries.
This unexpected incident has completely shocked and devestated the Sisson family, the students, staff and parents at her school, and her fellow students and instructors at her dance studio.
Parents John & Ivy are struggling to cope with Joanne's injury and unknown future. While they keep the faith and remain hopeful that she will recover, and Joanne's spirits remain positive, the pain of not having their daughter home is very much to bear.
We are the parents that form Joanne's school's Parent Association, and we want to support this family through their tragedy in any way we can.
The funds raised will be used to support Joanne and her family in any way that is needed, from unexpected bills and time off work, to help Joanne regain some of the childhood milestones that she will have lost. Joanne will be missing out on her Grade 6 graduation, awards ceremony, and at least a year of dance.
Joanne and her family will have a long road ahead, and anything that we can do to put this tragic accident in their past is our duty as members of their community and fellow parents.
