Help Send 100 Student/Youth Leaders to 6th
Annual HBCU Climate Conference

The Deep South Center For Environmental Justice  (Dr. Beverly Wright) in collaboration with  Dr. Robert D.  Bullard  (Texas Southern University) and Rev. Brooks Berndt of the  United Church of Christ Environmental Ministries , will convene the  Sixth  Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities  (HBCU) Climate Change Conference  in New Orleans September 20 - 23, 2018. Our goal is to grow a new generation of climate leaders and build an intergenerational movement for climate justice.  The conference theme this year is “Fighting for Our Lives.” We will bring together HBCU faculty, students, researchers, climate scientists, policy makers, faith leaders, youth and residents from frontline communities impacted by industrial pollution, flooding and severe weather events in the Gulf Coast region, including Hurricanes Katrina, Ike, Irma and Harvey.  We expect some 300 participants at the conference.  Our consortium is seeking $25,000 by September 15, 2018 to supplement travel scholarships for 100 students/youth leaders from the five Gulf Coast states (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida) to attend the four-day event.

The conference will include high school students and youth leaders that we will introduce to climate science, research, career and civic engagement opportunities.  The conference will also address issues related to climate justice, adaptation, community resilience, equitable recovery, global climate issues, and other major climate change topics (i.e. transportation, energy sources, carbon emissions, green jobs/green economy, just transition, and community economic development). The sessions will be interactive, including computer-simulated activities.

We are grateful for any amount given to support our emerging climate leaders.
