Our beloved family ranch house, the house we all grew up in, the house my parents lived in for 43 years and raised 5 children in was completely destroyed by the Woolsey fires on Friday 11/9. It’s burned to the ground.... everything! My parents, Gary & Valarie Haynes, brothers and 4 dogs had a short warning to get out because the fires had traveled so fast across the freeway in Agoura Hills. They left hoping they would be back home that evening, only to find out the house was gone a few hours later. Their guest house which they depended on for their mortgage and all the work they have done on their main house trying to convert the back part into a rental to retire on is now gone! They do have insurance but it will not be nearly enough to recover all that was lost as well as rebuild. Right now all they have is a back seat of a few belongings and trunk of clothes. They are completely starting over! All my own childhood memories and pictures are gone as well, but it’s nothing compared to the devastation of what our family has lost. We are heartbroken... for all the memories, pictures, memorabilia, holidays, gatherings and the place we call home. For those who have asked us how they can help, thank you so much for all your incredible love and support!!

Here is a message from our mom & dad who are so thankful below...

This is Thanksgiving!
To all of you who sent your Prayers and Support to our Family we are Profoundly Grateful!

Many have asked our thoughts about the fire and our loss, so here goes:

We all go through a fire of some kind in life, so we aren't special.

Though we wonder why our home burned with a fire hydrant in front of our house that was never used, our thoughts are this: we're a Christian family, so it's better that we lost our home than someone else who doesn't have the emotional and spiritual strength we have to deal with it.

We still see all this as a form of blessing. We were blessed to receive our home 43 yrs ago. It didn't burn down, it burned UP, so we send it back to the Giver, send it up in the smoke, as an offering.

What we feel could be called ecstatic depression. We feel the lightness of being, without all the stuff. We lost all the stuff. But, when you live in a house 43 years, it becomes like a person, so we're grieving a death. When we think of all the laughter and tears, meals and conversation that lived in these walls...the plaster and the wood were full of people's lives. More than a house died. So, we're grieving.

We had mixed feelings about the GoFundMe page after we heard it was set up, but it turns out all of you are giving more than money, you are giving Yourselves. It's a spiritual act. And your gift, Your Life, is flowing on through us.

People hug us in stores. We are all sharing love and loss. Everyone, everywhere. But there is also much to Celebrate! We celebrate Life! We Celebrate butterflies, and waterfalls and snow! We Celebrate You! We hope you join us this Thanksgiving in sending UP your Gratitude to the One who the Psalmist says “knew you in your Mother's womb, and who knew every one of your days before you lived even one of them.” Thank the One who loves you most.

There is a scripture that says: “He will give us Beauty for Ashes”. So maybe we will write something beautiful about all this, or maybe it means out of these ashes, we'll reflect His Beauty in a greater way. Again, thank you, thank you!. -Gary and Valarie Haynes
