Hands For Rick

My name is Rick Thompson. On May 2015 I contracted strep pneumonia and bacterial meningitis. I was rushed to the hospital where I was immediately put on full life support and placed into a medically induced coma for 4 1/2 weeks. During this time I developed sepsis and necrosis causing my hands and feet to turn black due to lack of circulation. Once I woke up I was faced with the news that I would lose my hands and feet. On June 5th I underwent a 7 1/2 hour surgery to remove all four of my limbs at certain stages. After 4 months at the hospital I was finally well enough to go to rehabilitation where I spent the last 4 1/2 months recovering.

The money that I am trying to raise is for Myo-electric hands called the Michelangelo. These hands will give me the greatest function and the best chance at becoming a contributing member of society again as I am only 47 years old.

We would like to reach our goal by the end of this year as it will take 18 months of rehabilitation to learn how to use the hands.

Unfortunately these hands are very expensive and insurance only covers a very small portion.
