Mercedes is a bright young 14 year old girl who had the flu one day and was in a coma the next. Desperate to stay together by her side in Brisbane, this family of six from Mackay needs immediate assistance. Can you help?

Background information:

I am the aunty of a beautiful 14 year old girl named Mercedes and sister to Troy, her father. I am appealing to the community to help support my brother’s family through a heartbreaking family crisis. They have the weight of the world on their shoulders right now and I would like your help to lessen that load with some financial assistance.

On the 30th of August, our precious Mercedes went to bed feeling a little unwell and by 3am the next morning she was being rushed off to emergency in an ambulance. Her parents, Troy and Becky, were absolutely unaware of the nightmare that was about to unfold.

Mercedes’ organs began shutting down faster than the doctors could help her, so she was put into an induced coma. As her health declined, her parents were told that Mercedes would have to be flown to Brisbane for treatment as she needed specialised care. Due to her fragile state, special equipment was needed to keep her alive. Her family had to then endure an agonizing wait while doctors and equipment from Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital were flown to Mackay.

Once Mercedes was stabilised, she was flown to Brisbane. But with only one parent permitted on the flight, her dad and siblings had to stay behind. They frantically put whatever supplies they could into the family car and drove 12-13 hours to Brisbane to be with Mercedes.

It has now been confirmed that Mercedes has influenza B, pneumonia, sepsis and an unidentified bacterial infection. Mercedes has been put on a kidney dialysis machine and may need further life-saving treatment such as, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. She remains in a critical condition and it is expected that she will be in the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital for an extended period of time.

Mercedes’ parents and three siblings are by her side around the clock, holding her hand. They are a devoted family who are extremely anxious about whether they can keep their family together in Brisbane during this crucial time. They only need a temporary helping hand to supplement their loss of casual income and pay for living expenses while Mercedes is in hospital. Any help would be very, very, very much appreciated.

Mercedes continues to fight her illness. She has undergone surgery this week and has started physiotherapy. She still battles with temperatures and requires kidney dialysis. Her spirits are wavering but her amazing family are by her side doing everything to reduce the emotional scares of this terrible ordeal.
We would like to thank the students from Summerville House for making 1000 origami cranes to hang in Mercedes's room. It has really brightened up the place and hopefully will give her future luck with her recovery. Thank you to all who have sent cards and gift baskets. Mercedes told me herself that she is looking forward to having some chocolate when she is well enough. We are truely touched that everyone has taken the time to think of Mercedes and her family. We feel very blessed to have such caring people around us.

Mercedes is doing very well. She has been taken off the ventilator and is breathing with very little assistance now. She is communicating with her family and keen to get out of bed. She has many more bridges to cross but is making wonderful progress each day.

An update from Becky (Mercedes' mum): she is much more settled today, they've decided to leave her tube in still give her a bit longer on the ventilator. They tried her off dialysis overnight but her kidneys still aren't functioning, so she's back on dialysis. Still has temps but they are doing lots of monitoring and just keeping her comfortable. We have been giving her everyone's love and wishes
